In a state with a storied basketball history, Rick Mount of Lebanon was one of the best. He was a three-time all-state and all-America selection and won the coveted Mr. Basketball Award in Indiana in 1966.
Mount scored 2,595 points during his high school days with yearly averages of 20.4, 23.6, 33.1 and 33.1. His Lebanon teams were 72-23 during his four years. His top performance was 57 points as a senior.
Mount appeared on the February 1966 cover of Sports Illustrated, the first high school athlete to be featured as a cover story.
His success continued in college at Purdue University, winning all-America and all-Big Ten Conference honors three consecutive years. He scored 2,323 points in three years at Purdue to establish a school record. His yearly averages were 28.4, 33.3 and 35.4 with a best of 61 points as a senior against Iowa. The only thing that kept him from winning NCAA scoring titles was a person named Pete Maravich.
He played professional basketball for a period of time in the American Basketball Association.
Mount, who was born January 5, 1947, still resides in Lebanon.
