One individual was a double winner on the day, another successfully repeated as a state champion and the Carmel girls team continued to extend its national record of consecutive team titles during the 46th gathering of Indiana's best high school girls swimmers and divers at the IU Natatorium.

Devon Kitchel, a Zionsville sophomore, swept the 200 indidual medley in 1:59.47 and 100 butterfly events in 54.04.

Junior Mary Catherine Pruitt of South Bend St. Joseph repeated as the 500 freestyle winner in 4:47.03 bettering her winning mark of last year of 4:39.42.

Carmel piled up 426.5 points, the fourth-most in meet history, overwhelming the rest of the field to easily take another team title. The Greyhounds had at least two participants in every individual event except diving and three in three other races.

Fishers finished as the runner-up with 208 points and Franklin Community was third with 165.

The Greyhounds claimed the program's 34th consecutive state title, extending its national record in any sport or gender. Head coach Chris Plumb has guided the Greyhounds to their last 14 championships, the most in state history in the sport. Also the school's boys coach, Plumb has combined for 22 total championships as a coach and now is within one title of Hall of Famer Chuck Koeppen, Carmel's former cross country and track coach, for the most in state history.

Carmel won the opening event of the meet, the 200 medley relay, for the 12th straight year winning in 1:41.33 and proceeded to sweep all three relays for the seventh time in the last eight years.

Sophomore Gretchen Lueking won the 200 freestyle in 1:47.50 and freshman Berit Berglund took the 100 backstroke in 53.41 to give the Greyhounds two individual winners.

Evansville Memorial senior Elizabeth Broshears claimed the 50 freestyle in 22.97. Defending champ Elsa Fretz of Northridge ended third in 23.14.

Fishers junior Morgan Casey topped the field in the one meter diving competititon with 508.90 points. She became the second Fishers diver to win the title joining Shelby Bartlett in 2012.

Sophomore Kristina Paegle of Bloomington South edged out Gretchen Lueking at the wall in a great 100 free race. Paegle touched in 49.57, just .19 of a second ahead of the Carmel sophomore. Defending champion Emma Wright of Hobart finished third in 50.52.

And Sammy Huff, Noblesville junior, won the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.87 to become the first swimmer from her school since 2001 to claim a state title.

Elizabeth Broshears named Mental Attitude Award recipient
Senior Elizabeth Broshears of Evansville Reitz Memorial High School was recognized following the state championship meet by the IHSAA Executive Committee as this year’s winner of the Mental Attitude Award.

Elizabeth was crowned state champion in the 50 yard freestyle, took home fourth place in the 100 yard butterfly and was a member of her school’s 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.  She qualified for the state meet all four years of her high school career and entered today’s meet as the top seed in the 100 yard butterfly. Elizabeth has also competed at the National Junior Olympic level for the past three years and received All American Swimming honors.

Outside of athletics, Elizabeth is involved with Key Club, Student Council, Academic Superbowl, Tiger Pride, Tiger Ambassadors, and National Honor Society.  Elizabeth also holds the “chaplain” office in Student Council, which carries the responsibility of reflecting and writing prayers.

She has been recognized as a National Merit Scholar finalist, a Rising Star of Indiana, and a Scholastic All American.  Additionally, Elizabeth has been awarded the prestigious Lilly Foundation Scholarship.

She is the 21st recipient from Memorial to be awarded an IHSAA mental attitude award and the second this school year (Samuel Hodge, 2A boys soccer last fall).

Elizabeth is the daughter of Phillip and Amy Broshears of Evansville. She will be attending Indiana University in the fall where she will continue her swimming career and study biochemistry en route to medical school.

Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior who was nominated by her principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s proud corporate partner, presented $1,000 to Evansville Reitz Memorial High School's general scholarship fund in the name of Elizabeth Broshears.
