Wawasee's Mishler sets state record, sweeps sprint events; Carmel team wins 39th straight

INDIANAPOLIS - Every championship team has things about their make-up that stand out.
For this year’s Carmel girls swimming and diving team the championship, their national record extending 39th in a row, was a showcase in their depth and resiliency as a squad.
The Greyhounds scored an impressive 448 points, the fourth most in state history, more than doubling second place Carroll (Fort Wayne). The winning margin of 235.5 points was the sixth widest margin in state history.
Fishers (170), Hamilton Southeastern (142) and Franklin Community (136) rounded out the top five.
“Getting the fourth most points in history speaks to the depth of this team, and getting so many girls into the ‘A’ final, where all those points are scored,” Carmel head coach Chris Plumb said. “They really came together this whole year. We fought through some adversity the last couple of weeks, everyone had the flu, so there were times it was a little dicey, but for them to come out and do what they did today was a real testament to their work.”
The Greyhounds brought 27 swims to the State Finals at the Indiana University Natatorium and had 21 in the championship final.
Carmel won six events on the day, sweeping the three relays to go along with wins from senior Lynsey Bowen in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.89), senior Alex Shackell in the 100-yard butterfly (50.67) and freshman Ellie Clark in the 100-yard backstroke (54.34).
Plumb said he really enjoyed the way the relays came together and watching them compete as a group, but what also stood out was the unselfishness of his team.
Things like Bowen, the three-time state champion in the 500, swimming butterfly instead this year.
Or standouts Shackell and Faith Gorey being on all three relays, foregoing an extra individual event to give others on the team a chance to excel.
“Their willingness to do all three relays and one individual - that speaks to what this team means,” Plumb said. “Instead of being about individual athletes, it’s where can I best serve the team?”
For Shackell, an Olympic gold medalist, it was her final high school state meet.
She finishes her prep career with 15 state titles, and on Saturday became the first female to win the 100-yard butterfly four-straight times. Shackell is just the 15th four-time single event champion in state history.
“This is one of the most fun times of the year,” Shackell said. “I really enjoy being with my teammates that I train with all the time. It’s sad to see it end, because it’s something that happens every year and it is going to be weird not doing it next year, but it was the time of my life being with this group and we are a dynasty - 39 years is absolutely insane.”
While Carmel controlled the team race, plenty of others were leaving their marks in other events.
Wawasee senior Julie Mishler swept the sprint freestyles on Saturday, the only athlete to win two individual events.
Mishler also had the only state record on the day, going 47.86 in the 100-yard freestyle to best her time of 47.88 from the prelims on Friday evening. The time is the first under 48 seconds in State Finals history.
She finished her 50-yard freestyle in 21.74 seconds, just .02 off the state record.
“I am pretty proud of myself,” Mishler said. “ I am a little disappointed in the 50-free, but that’s OK, that’s normal as an athlete. I am really proud of the 100-free and how that turned out. It was really good and a lot of fun. I wanted to re-break the record today. I kind of messed up my finish at the end, so I could have gone a little faster, but I was happy with it.”
Carroll sophomore Jordyn Glassley came from behind to win the 200-yard IM in 2:00.42.
Fishers sophomore Emily Wolf finished first in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:46.47 and Valparaiso junior Madeline Moreth claimed the title in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:00.58.
North Central junior Adelyn Flessner scored 441.80 points to win diving.

Wawasee's Beasley earns Mental Attitude Award
Addison Beasley of Wawasee High School was named the recipient of the Mental Attitude Award by the IHSAA Executive Committee after today's state meet.
Academically, Addison ranks third in her senior class, is a member of the National Honors Society, an AP Scholar Award winner, and a four- year Scholar Athlete.
She qualified for the State Finals in the 200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke, and was a part of the Warriors’ 200 medley and 200 free relay teams. Elected a team captain the last two years, Addison has qualified for state all four years and holds the school record in each of those events and the conference and sectional marks in the IM and breaststroke. Outside of school, she is also a nine-year 4-H club member.
Addison is the daughter of Vince and Lindsay Beasley of Syracuse, Ind. She will be attending the Ball State University where she will be majoring in Nursing or Pre-Medicine. She is the first Wawasee girls swimmer to be awarded an IHSAA mental attiutude award, the eighth in any sport and first since 2007.
Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior who was nominated by her principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s proud corporate partner, presented $1,000 to the Wawasee High School's general scholarship fund in the name of Addison Beasley.
