Warsaw Claims 2nd Unified Track® and Field Title

Posted: June 4, 2016

Ten points separated the top four teams in an extremely competitive meet at this year’s Unified Track® and Field State Finals. Warsaw was able to hold off Noblesville, Crown Point, and Fishers to earn the Third Annual event. The Tigers tallied 107 points on the day, while the Millers scored 103. Fishers and Crown Point tied for third with 97 points each.

For the second consecutive year, additional sectional sites were added to the tournament to accommodate increasing participant numbers. The top two teams from last weekend’s sectionals advanced to make up the state finals field of twelve teams. Over 175 athletes competed in this year’s state meet, as the number of schools around the state continue to grow or introduce Unified Track® to their athletic programs.

Unified Sports® enables persons with and without intellectual disabilities to participate on the same team for sports training and competition. The “Champions Together” partnership between the Indiana High School Athletic Association and Special Olympics Indiana was launched in 2012. While the IHSAA provides provides the framework for competition, Special Olympics Indiana provides technical support and financial grants to a number of schools who start new Unified Track ® programs.
