Posted: November 5, 2016

Skyler Van Note's 28 kills helped rally Wapahani past Covenant Christian in five sets, 22-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-22, 15-8, to claim their second consecutive Class 2A volleyball state championship.

Teammate Estella Davis followed Van Note with 22 kills and Lexi Spence, ranked second in the state in assists, tallied 61 for the match. Libero Havyn Gates snagged 26 digs in the back row while Van Note also totaled 18 for the Raiders.

Fourth-year head coach Jared Richardson led Wapahani (32-6) to its fifth volleyball state championship and fourth in the last six years. The team finished their regular season 31-6.

Covenant Christian was making its first trip to volleyball finals in school history, just the third team in any sport to make an appearance in the finals. The team was led by Rachel Newport who claimed 18 kills and 14 digs and Hope Notter who assisted on kills and also tallied 17 digs.

The Warriors (33-5) were led by first-year coach Brooke Stamper, a 2011 graduate of the school.

Wapahani’s Chase Curry named Mental Attitude Award Recipient
At the conclusion of the state finals, the IHSAA Executive Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, named Chase Curry of Wapahani High School as the winner of the Class 2A Mental Attitude Award.

A four-year letter winner in volleyball, Chase helped lead the Raiders to back-to-back state finals appearances and was also a member of the Munciana Regional Championship team. While her duties as the manager of the Men’s Volleyball team keep her active year-round with the sport, Chase is able to maintain active leadership roles in other community and school organizations as well. A member of her school’s National Honor Society chapter, she serves as both Wapahani’s Student Council and Student Body president. In addition to all of her leadership roles, Chase still finds time to volunteer as a special education aide and a peer tutor.

Chase is the daughter of Ron Curry and Tracy Hendricks of Muncie, Indiana. Next school year, she plans to attend Ball State University to pursue a degree in nursing.

Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior player who was nominated by her principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, presenting sponsor of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in Class 2A Volleyball, will donate $1,000 to Wapahani High School's general scholarship fund in the name of Chase Lynn Curry.
