Valparaiso Wins the Sixth Annual Unified Track and Field State Championship
Valparaiso took the top prize at the Sixth Annual Unified Track & Field State Finals holding off Bedford North Lawrence by a score of 124-109. Valparaiso’s student-athletes performed from the very beginning allowing them hoist the championship trophy this afternoon in Bloomington.
It was the Vikings' first title in the sport and the 26th overall in the history of the school. The team was coached by Dave Prokop.
Defending champion Elkhart Memorial had a great showing scoring 101 points for third place in its return to the state finals. McCutcheon, Penn, and Fishers rounded out the top six by scoring 96, 95, and 90 points, respectively. Columbus North, Jennings County, New Albany, Bloomington North, Jasper and Carroll (Fort Wayne) had great support and all finished within 16 points of each other. It was Carroll’s first showing at the state meet.
Unified Sports® enables persons with and without intellectual disabilities to participate on the same team for sports training and competition. The “Champions Together” partnership between the Indiana High School Athletic Association and Special Olympics Indiana was launched in 2012. While the IHSAA provides the framework for competition, Special Olympics Indiana provides technical support and financial grants to a number of schools who start new Unified Track ® programs.
