Two Individual Champions Help Greyhounds To Second Track and Field Title
Two individual champions helped Carmel to its second-ever IHSAA boys track and field state title and first since 2000 at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex in Bloomington.
The Greyhounds accumulated 49 points to outpace runner-up Ben Davis with 36.75 and third-place Warren Central with 36.
Coach Ken Browner’s team was paced by a pair of first place finishes from sophomore Jalen Walker, who posted a 37.74 in the 300 hurdles, and junior Ben Veatch, who ran a blazing 8:53.77 in the 3200. The Greyhounds’ were also the beneficiaries of top five finishes in three different field events.
Two seniors, Vince Laconi and Isaac James, both finished fourth in the shot put and long jump, respectively. Sophomore Ryan Lipe, meanwhile, took home a third place finish in the pole vault with a height of 15-09.
The pole vault event was undoubtedly one of the more exciting events of the evening. After seven competitors cleared 15-00, Bloomington South’s Deakin Volz took home first prize for the second consecutive season by smashing his previous state record with an impressive height of 17-06.
Stoney Prowell was the night’s other repeat champion. The senior from Indianapolis Marshall won the 400 meter dash with a time of 47.09, improving on last year’s time of 48.40.
The 200 meter finals ended in a photo finish, as the top two places finished within one-tenth of a second of each other. D’Wayne Eskridge, a junior from Bluffton, bested Isaiah Thomas, the previous year’s state champion, with a time of 21.39.
The official attendance for Friday’s event at Indiana University’s Robert C. Hough Track and Field Complex was 4,793.
