Tecumseh Crowned Class A Softball Champs
The 33rd Annual IHSAA Softball State Finals at Ben Davis High School kicked off with Tecumseh claiming the Class A Title.
The Braves jumped on the board early and never looked back, as they defeated the Tri Titans by a score of 3-0. Maddie Duncan, Tecumseh’s junior pitcher, got the party started for the Braves. After Duncan doubled in the first inning, classmate Kirsten Greenberg knocked an RBI single that brought home Camryn Boylls, who was pinch running. Tecumseh added a second run in the top half of the fourth inning. This time, it was Greenberg crossing the plate after freshman outfielder Chloe Holder drilled a two-out double to right field.
As the game moved into the 7th frame, Tecumseh was able to capitalize on a number of costly Tri errors that led to a Brave’s insurance run. After two runners reached base on fielding and throwing errors, Maddie Duncan came through with her fourth hit of the game (setting a class A State Finals game record). Duncan’s single, coupled with Tri’s third error of the inning, was enough to plate senior Mariah Rush and give Tecumseh another insurance run.
But one run was all the Braves would need. In addition to having field day at the plate, Tecumseh’s Maddie Duncan dominated on the mound. She was able to pitch a complete game, three hit shutout that stymied the Titans’ lineup.
Tecumseh, coached by Gordon Wood, finished their season by winning their third Softball State Championship with a record of 23-9. The Titans meanwhile, coached by Bryan Peggs and Duke Falck, ended an impressive 2017 campaign with a final record of 25-4.
