The Carmel Greyhounds won three of the 12 total events on Saturday, while several other high placing finishes helped them secure their seventh consecutive IHSAA Boys Swimming and Diving State Championship.

The Greyhounds successfully defended their 200 Medley Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay state titles while Ryan Malicki took home the 100 Breaststroke crown. The Greyhounds scored 360 total points.

Sophomore Will Modglin from Zionsville was a two-event winner, besting the field in the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Backstroke. The Zionsville Eagles finished third as a team with 189.5 points.

Delta High School also won three events as senior Sam Bennett finished his high school career by putting up an impressive score of 615.55 and defending his title in One Meter Diving. Fellow senior Brady Samuels took the crown in the 100 Butterfly and 50 Freestyle. His time of 19.72 in the 50 Free was less than half a second off the state record.

The Penn Kingsman repeated as 200 Freestyle Relay state champions with a time of 1:21.29, .08 seconds away from tying the state record.

Seniors Keegan Streett of Hamilton Southeastern and Ethan Martin of Center Grove finished their high school careers with a blue-ribbon medal as Streett took first in the 200 Freestyle and Martin finished first in the 100 Freestyle.

The Fishers Tigers finished as the Runner-Up team this year with 198.5 total points. Senior Jackson Carlile and Junior Kyle Ponsler finished one-two in the 500 Freestyle. Three Tigers divers finished in the top 10 as juniors William Jansen finished second and Sebastian Otero finished sixth. Freshman Jack Roby finished 10th.

Delta's Sam Bennett wins Mental Attitude Award
Senior Sam Bennett of Delta High School was recognized following the state championship meet by the IHSAA Executive Committee as this year’s winner of the Herman F. Keller Mental Attitude Award.

Bennett is the reigning two-time diving state champion, winning the one meter diving state title the past two years. Sam was a state qualifier in diving all four years of his high school career.

Out of the pool, Sam has excelled in the classroom earning a 3.8 GPA. He is a member of Delta’s National Honor Society and the Early College Program where he has earned 33 transferrable college credits.

He is the son of John Bennett of Delta and will attend the Purdue University to dive for the Boilermakers. He is undecided on his college major.

Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior who was nominated by his principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability.

The award honors the former IHSAA assistant commissioner who served the Association from 1961-73. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship to the Delta High School general scholarship fund in the name of the Sam Bennett.
