Schneider Wins Third Singles Crown, Carmel Pair Takes Doubles
Bloomington South's Ronnie Schneider capped an outstanding prep career with another singles state championship and Carmel teammates Charlie Emhardt and Dan Rodefeld emerged as the winners of the doubles tournament.
Schneider, a senior, topped Dan Rayl of Park Tudor in the final match, 6-2, 6-1 to secure his third consecutive state title, just the second player to do so. South Bend Adams' Paul Koscielski won three straight from 1981-83. Schneider (34-0) went 83-0 during his three year run and finished his prep career at 101-3.
Rayl, a sophomore, was attempting to win the singles title after winning the doubles crown as a freshman a year ago.
Like Schneider, Emhardt and Rodefeld (31-2) earned a bye into Saturday morning's semifinal round and won both matches on the day including a 6-0, 6-1 win over Noah Moss and Will Seger of Jasper in the final match. The seniors coupled their doubles championship along with the team state title they celebrated with their Carmel teammates a week ago. Rodefeld's older sister, Sarah, also won a state doubles title with Carmel in 2009-10.
