Carmel got off to a quick start Saturday, taking home the first three events and breaking two state records during those events. The Greyhounds went on to win six of the 12 total events and set five total state records to capture the 83rd Annual IHSAA Boys Swimming and Diving State Finals.

After helping Carmel win the 200 Medley Relay and setting a new state record with a time of 1:27.94, Jacob Mitchell and Wyatt Davis went on to capture the 200 Freestyle and the 200 Individual Medley, respectively. Davis' title in the 200 Individual Medley broke a 10-year old record as well, finishing the event in 1:44.17.

The two didn't stop there though. Davis went on to win the 100 Backstroke for the fourth time, breaking the state record and becoming the most decorated swimmer in IHSAA history with a time of :45.88. Mitchell finshed the 500 Freestyle in 4:14.68, giving him the title for the third straight year and breaking the record he set last year. The two helped Carmel win the final event of the day, the 400 Freestyle Relay, which marked the fifth new record of the day, with a time of 2:56.36.

Boonville's Braden Rollins also impressed winning both the 50 Freestyle and the 100 Freestyle in times of :20.20 and :43.84.

Seniors Tristan DeWitt and Andrew Alders also went home with a blue ribbon medal. DeWitt of Carroll (Fort Wayne) reclaimed his spot atop the podium in the 100 Butterfly, improving his 2019 time by a half second at :47.07. Alders on the other hand upset last year's champion in the 100 Breaststroke with a winning time of :54.65.

In diving, Sam Bennett of Delta took home the crown Saturday after finishing 4th in 2019. He finished with 500.10 points, putting him ahead of the second place diver by nearly 15 points.

Penn's 200 Freestyle Relay team comprised of Joseph Radde, Aaron Dies, Joel Cummins, and Brock Zuyderwyk, finished in 1:22.60 to capture first place and help their team capture sixth place in the final standings.

Carmel's head coach, Chris Plumb, won his sixth consecutive state title and is now tied for the most state championships of any coach in IHSAA history.

Jake Mitchell wins Mental Attitude Award
Senior Jake Mitchell of Carmel High School was recognized following the state championship meet by the IHSAA Executive Committee as this year’s winner of the Mental Attitude Award.

Mitchell is a decorated swimmer, winning IHSAA titles in the 200 Medley Relay, 200 Freestyle, 500 Freestyle, and the 400 Freestyle relay. He is also the state record holder in the 200 Medley Relay, the 500 Freestyle, and the 400 freestyle relay. Jake has been apart of the Carmel swim team all 4 years of his high school career and is a 4-time Team State Champion. He has numerous other swimming records, titles, and honors outside of the IHSAA as well.

Out of the pool, Jake volunteers with Carmel's Champions Together Unified Track team, coaches 11-12 year olds on the Carmel Swim Club, and has volunteered with multiple food drives. Mitchell has also been recognized as a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and received the Outstanding Citizen Award from the City of Carmel.

He is the son of Michael and Tina Mitchell of Carmel and will attend the University of Michigan to study Biochemistry and swim for the Wolverines.

Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior who was nominated by her principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. The Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, presented $1,000 to Carmel High School's general scholarship fund in the name of Jake Mitchell.
