Providence came blasting out of the gate and went on to a 62-49 win over No. 3 Central Noble in the Class 2A state championship game.

In a contest featuring two schools making their first-ever appearances in the state finals, the Pioneers rolled out to a 25-9 lead after one quarter, hitting a torrid, 10-of-14 from the floor (71 percent) – including 4-of-5 from 3-point range.

Coach Ryan Miller’s Pioneers (21-6) held leads of 31-20 at halftime and 44-31 after three quarters, then finished strong by building a lead as large as 21 points (57-36) in the final quarter before settling for the final margin.

Providence held Central Noble sharpshooter Connor Essegian to 18 points – with 10 coming in the last 9:25 of the game. The Wisconsin-recruit came in averaging 26.8 per-game and leaves CN as the 10th-leading scorer in state history.

Casey Kaelin led the winners with 21 points – nine coming in that first quarter.

The Cougars of coach John Bodley finish 28-3.

Cade Carver of Providence named Trester Award winner
Following today’s game, the IHSAA Executive Committee named Cade Carver of Providence High School as the recipient of the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award presented by the Indiana Pacers and Indiana Fever.

The award is annually presented to a senior, who is nominated by his principal and coach, and has demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability during his four years of high school.

The starting point guard, Carver has been a four-year member of the Pioneers basketball team where he’s been captain for his freshmen, JV and varsity squads. He is a National Honor Society member and a ranks 12th in his senior class with a 4.4 GPA.

He is the son of Brent and Sarah Carver of Sellersburg, IN and will be attending Indiana University to study Intelligent Systems Engineering.

The Indiana Pacers and Indiana Fever, presenting sponsors of the IHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament, presented a $1,000 scholarship to the general scholarship fund at Our Lady of Providence High School in the name of Cade Carver.

The 4A, 3A and 2A awards are named in honor of the late Arthur L. Trester who served as first commissioner of the Association from 1929 to 1944. Trester helped Indiana high school sports and the IHSAA emerge from the Great Depression in a position of preeminence unmatched by perhaps any other state in the nation.
