Linton-Stockton left little doubt in capturing the Class 2A championship in its first-ever finals appearance with a record-setting, 70-28 triumph over unranked Frankton.

The fourth-ranked Miners dazzled in the first half, leading 47-16 at the break – a Class 2A game record for points in one half.

At one point, after junior guard Vanessa Shafford hit a field goal for a 39-11 advantage, L-S was shooting 70 percent from the field. Later in the half, the Miners held a 33-point lead. Shafford outscored the Eagles by herself with 19 points during the first two quarters.

Coach Jared Rehmel’s Miners (25-5) continued the onslaught into the third quarter, taking a 55-21 lead into the final eight minutes, then building to the final margin of 42 points – a record for Class 2A.

Stafford finished with 26 points, Aubrey Burgess 19 and Haley Rose 13 for the winners.

Chloee Thomas led Frankton with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Coach Stephan Hamaker’s Eagles finished 21-8.

Frankton’s Bailey Tucker named Mental Attitude Award winner
Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Bailey Tucker of Frankton High School as the winner of the Patricia L. Roy Mental Attitude Award in Class 2A Girls Basketball.

The award is presented annually to a senior participant in each classification who was nominated by her principal and coach and has demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability.

She is an outstanding student-athlete currently ranked 11th in her class with a 4.057 GPA which will allow her to be inducted into the Frankton High School Academic Hall of Fame on March 9.

She has been involved in National Honor Society, Peer Helpers and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is a three-year letterwinner in girls basketball and also volunteers as an academic tutor at FHS and multiple years for their youth basketball camp.

She is the daughter of Bobby Tucker (stepmom Michelle Tucker) and Shannon Tucker of Anderson and will study Chemical Engineering at Ball State University.

The Indiana Fever and Indiana Pacers, the presenting sponsor of the IHSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Frankton High School in the name of Bailey Tucker. Since 1989, more than $840,000 in college scholarships have been presented to deserving high school athletes in Indiana.

The award is named in honor of the former IHSAA assistant commissioner Patricia L. Roy, who oversaw the girls basketball state tournament from its inception in 1976 until her retirement in 1999.
