Lafayette Jefferson captures Second Annual Unified Track® and Field State Finals Crown

Posted: June 6, 2015

The second annual United Track® and Field State Finals saw close competition from the 10 schools participating in the afternoon’s event. The Bronchos from Lafayette Jefferson (100 points) edged out Kokomo (97), Crown Point (93), and Noblesville (92) to hoist the first place trophy at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex at Indiana University.

This year, the State Tournament saw an expanded field as more schools introduced United Track® to their athletic programs. Five sectional sites from across the state sent their top two teams to Bloomington for the weekend’s competition. Last year, only two sites were needed to host the number of schools that participated. The Kokomo, Noblesville, Mt. Vernon, Terre Haute South, and Michigan City teams all won sectional championships in this year’s tournament.

Unified Sports® enables persons with and without intellectual disabilities to participate on the same team for sports training and competition. The “Champions Together” partnership between the Indiana High School Athletic Association and Special Olympics Indiana was launched in 2012. While the IHSAA provides provides the framework for competition, Special Olympics Indiana provides technical support and financial grants to a number of schools who start new Unified Track ® programs.
