Kibler's Big Day Helps Carmel to Third Consecutive State Title
Drew Kibler won the 100- and 200-yard freestyles and was on two winning relays, helping Carmel to a third consecutive team title in the 80th IHSAA boys swimming and diving championships Saturday in Indianapolis.
The championship was the sixth in eight years and 17th since 1989-90 for Carmel, which scored a near-record 359 points. Also for the third year in a row, Zionsville finished second at the Natatorium on the IUPUI campus.
The state record for points is 369, set by Carmel in 2003. The Greyhounds’ 130-point margin over second place was fifth-largest in state history. However, a measure of Zionsville’s strength is that it had nearly as many top-three finishes (nine) as Carmel (10).
Chesterton finished third with 205 points and Bloomington South fourth with 148.
Kibler lowered the state record in the 100-yard freestyle for a second and third time within 22 hours. He won the final in 43.20, bettering his 43.25 from prelims, then led off the 400 freestyle relay even faster -- 43.02.
Kibler earlier won the 200 freestyle in 1:33.79, slower than his state record of 1:33.30 from prelims.
Carmel’s Andrew Couchon, Charles Vaughan, Stefano Batista and Kibler set a state record of 1:21.21 in the 200 freestyle relay.
Another relay record fell in the opening 200 medley, won by Zionsville in 1:29.44. Tyler Harmon, Brock Brown, Andrew Schuler and Jack Franzman broke the state record of 1:29.64 set by Chesterton in 2014.
Another double winner was Northridge’s Spencer Lehman. He won the 200 individual medley in 1:47.35 and repeated in the 500 freestyle in 4:23.10.
Carmel freshman Wyatt Davis, about 20 minutes after the 500 free, beat defending champion Harmon to win the 100 backstroke in 48.43. Davis became the first freshman to win that event since 1985 and only the second ever.

Zionsville’s Tyler Harmon named Herman F. Keller Mental Attitude Award
Tyler Harmon was recognized following the state championship meet by the IHSAA Executive Committee as this year’s winner of the Herman F. Keller Mental Attitude Award.
Harmon was a member of Zionsville’s first place 200 Medley Relay team, swimming his leg of the relay in 22.68 seconds. He also finished third in the 200 Freestyle, runner-up in the 100 Backstroke, and was a member of the runner-up 400 Freestyle Relay team.
Besides swimming, Tyler has helped coordinate activities for the NFL Play60 campaign, and was awarded a National Youth Service America grant as founder of the Splish Splash swim clinics. Harmon is also a member of Zionsville’s Chinese Club, Best Buddies program, and the National Chinese Honor Society.
He is the son of Bryan and Xuejun Gu Harmon and will attend Yale University where he will continue competing in swimming while aiming to complete a degree economics and mathematics.
Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior who was nominated by his principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. The award, renamed in 1974, honors the former IHSAA assistant commissioner who served the Association from 1961 to 1973.
The Committee presented $1,000 to Zionsville High School's general scholarship fund in the name of Tyler Harmon.
