In a hotly contested event that went down to the wire, Indianapolis Cathedral edged the field to clinch its first-ever girls track and field state championship. This year's state meet was moved to Ben Davis High School after Indiana University was unable to host due to COVID-19 restrictions.

A three-way tie existed between Warren Central, Lawrence Central and North Central (Indianapolis) heading into the 1600 relay, the final event of the evening, with Cathedral in fourth with 29 points. Three more teams also had a mathematical chance at the crown. But it was Cathedral, who pulled away on junior Reese Sanders' anchor leg, who won in 3:54.24 capturing 10 points and ultimately the team title for the school with 39 points. Warren Central finished fourth in the race and thus one point shy of the team title with 38 points. Zionsville ended third in the overall standings with 33 points.

Sanders also took first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 43.36, and third place in the 100 hurdles. The Irish picked up valuable points from senior Alexis Parchman in the 100 meters as well as its 400 meter relay team, both of which claimed fourth place. Cathedral won the state title with only five qualifying runners. Their one-point margin of victory equaled the meet's closest finishes in 1982 and 1997 and it was lowest winning point total in 27 years.

Sophomore Lily Cridge of Indianapolis Bishop Chatard set the lone state record of the meet winning the 3200 meters in a time of 10:03.16 which eclipsed the 10:11.20 set by Mishawaka's Anna Rohrer in 2015.

Senior Tacoria Humphrey took first place in the high jump at 5-9 to head up Warren Central's runner-up effort. She also was a fourth place finisher in the 200 meters. Freshman Laila Smith impressed by finishing third in the 300 hurdles and fifth in the long jump to help the Warriors cause.

North Central junior Ramiah Elliott was able to defend her state titles from 2019 in the 200 meters (24.33) and 400 meters (55.08), and was a member of North Central’s winning 400 meter relay team (47.32), alongside Lailah Jewell, Delaney Moore, and Janae Bailey.

Junior Addison Wiley of Huntington North was also a double winner defending her title in the 1600 meters (4:45.27) and taking home the 800 meter crown (2:08.62).

Senior Erikka Hill of Shenandoah ended her career by defending her state title in the shot put with a throw of 45-4.25.

Attendance for the event was 4,380.

Emily Loiselle of Bishop Chatard High School Takes Home Mental Attitude Award
Members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Emily Loiselle of Indianapolis Bishop Chatard High School as the winner of this year’s Mental Attitude Award in Girls Track and Field.

Emily finished 15th in the 1600 Meter Run and was a member of Chatard’s 4x800 Meter Relay Team who placed fourth on Saturday. Emily is a three-sport athlete, also participating in cross country and swimming, and was sectional champion in the 1600 meters and the 3200 meter relay this season.

Emily ranks fourth in her class of 167 students. She is a Bishop Chatard Student Ambassador, a Senior Mentor, and a National Honor Society member.

The daughter of Keith and Melanie Loiselle of Indianapolis, Emily will attend Purdue University in the fall to pursue a degree in Computer Engineering.

The IHSAA Executive Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Indianapolis Bishop Chatard High School in the name of Emily Loiselle.
