Indianapolis Cathedral overwhelms Chesterton for second title, first 4A crown
Thanks to an all-around dominating performance, Cathedral captured its second state title with a 65-31 dismantling of previously-unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Chesterton in the Class 4A championship game.
The Irish of coach Jason Delaney broke out to leads of 10-0, 13-2 and 22-7 in the opening minutes and rolled to its first championship since 1998.
Cathedral (26-6) proved so dominant, it even set an all-time state finals record of most blocked shots in a game with 14.
The victory made Delaney the first coach in IHSAA history to lead three different schools to state titles. Delaney guided Waldron to the Class A title in 2004 and Indianapolis Arsenal Tech to a 4A title in 2014.
Jaron Tibbs led four Cathedral players in double figures with 15 points. Jaxon Edwards finished with 14 points, Xavier Booker netted 13 (along with nine rebounds and four blocks) and Tayshawn Comer 11.
Tyler Parrish and Carson Parrish each had seven points to lead Chesterton, which finishes 29-1.
The Trojans of coach Marc Urban, who were making their first-ever state finals appearance, were denied the chance to become the first team from northwest Indiana to win 30 games since Gary Roosevelt in 1991.

Chesterton’s Chris Mullen named Trester Award winner
Following today’s game, the IHSAA Executive Committee named Chris Mullen of Chesterton High School as the recipient of the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award presented by the Indiana Pacers and Indiana Fever.
The award is annually presented to a senior, who is nominated by his principal and coach, and has demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability during his four years of high school.
Chris owns a 4.1 GPA and is involved in many different activities and volunteers for numerous organizations at the school. He is also a key contributor to three Chesterton varsity sports in basketball, football and baseball and helped lead the Trojans to their first regional, semi-state and state championship game appearances in school history.
He is the son of Daniel and Janna Mullen of Chesterton, IN. Chris will attend the University of Indianapolis next fall with plans to study Exercise Science while playing football for the Greyhounds.
The Indiana Pacers and Indiana Fever, presenting sponsors of the IHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament, presented a $1,000 scholarship to the general scholarship fund at Chesterton High School in the name of Chris Mullen.
The 4A, 3A and 2A awards are named in honor of the late Arthur L. Trester who served as first commissioner of the Association from 1929 to 1944. Trester helped Indiana high school sports and the IHSAA emerge from the Great Depression in a position of preeminence unmatched by perhaps any other state in the nation.
