IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (9/16/24)

"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"

If you play sports long enough, chances are you will be on a team that pulls a major upset and come up with an unexpected win over a team you had no business beating.

This was never more evident than during the second week of college football when a top 10 team in the country, Notre Dame, lost to unranked and unheralded Northern Illinois, a 28-point underdog.  After the game, you could see the joy and happiness amongst the staff and players within NIU and shock with all those associated with ND.

It's an old saying, but every time there is an upset or unexpected win, you hear the words "that's why they play the game."

In your high school career, you are going to be faced with games you should win on paper, and games where you are the underdog and unlikely to win.  My advice is to approach every game like it is the most important game on your schedule.  Never overlook a team you should beat and don't fear a team that appears better than you. That's why you play the game!
