IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (10/14/24)

"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"

On Saturday's College Game Day on ESPN, former Alabama coach Nick Saban made a comment regarding discipline during the show that should ring true with all student-athletes.

He stated that, "You are going to suffer through two things in your life--the pain of discipline OR the pain of disappointment if you don't have discipline."

How can you relate that to your experience in the classroom and in your sport?

Have you ever missed a practice or neglected to prepare for an exam and suffered the consequence?  Discipline requires sacrifice, effort and difficult choices.  It is not always the popular choice.  It can absolutely be painful at times.

What Saban is saying is that you have a choice.  Disappointment is often the result of a lack of effort, preparation, or a poor choice.  He is right on all fronts.  Your choices and decisions have consequences.

If you want to WIN-regardless of the event, you will be willing to endure the pain of discipline.  The joy of winning outweighs the sting of anything you must do to get there!
