With the goal of promoting positive traditions and sportsmanship in the secondary students of our state, the Indiana High School Athletic Association will conduct its Ninth Annual Student Leadership Conference (SLC) on Tuesday (June 19) at Plainfield High School.

One of the largest conferences of its kind in the nation, a total of 850 attendees entering grades 10-12 and representing 93 different Indiana high schools are registered to participate at this year’s conference. All will have the opportunity to meet and interact with one another, hear from several speakers, both national and local in scope, and participate in three different breakout discussion sessions covering more than 30 wide-ranging topics.

Featured speakers include the internationally-acclaimed comedian/magician Stephen Bargatze, a constant at the SLC, and newcomer Rob Miller.

Bargatze’s genuine personality endears him to any audience and his motivational message touches many on an emotional level.

As commissioner of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference of the NAIA, Miller’s experiences as an athletic administrator, coach and competitor at both the high school and collegiate levels allow him a unique perspective to connect with the audience and motivate them to higher standards.

Additional state and local leaders will be on hand to lead discussion topics in numerous categories including sportsmanship and philanthropy, college preparation, mental toughness, proper eating and hydration, hazing, working with the media, and careers in sports to name a few.

 “The purpose of the conference has always been to help reinforce what is learned through interscholastic athletics and apply that to other aspects of a student-athletes life,” says IHSAA Assistant Commissioner Sandy Searcy, who has served as the Conference Administrator since its inception. “We want to assist them with life skills and information they can take with them to impact their own schools and communities.”

Members of the media are welcome to attend the event and should check-in at the school entrance.

Founded in 1903, the purpose of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, Inc. (IHSAA) is to encourage, regulate and give direction to wholesome amateur interschool athletic competition between its 408 member schools.
