Greyhounds top Ben Davis for fourth state championship
A year after falling short, this time Carmel left the Bankers Life Fieldhouse floor a winner.
Freshman guard Pete Suder led four Greyhounds in double figures with 14 points (on 7-of-11 shooting) to lead Carmel to a 60-55 victory over Ben Davis in the Class 4A title game.
Carmel, guided by second-year coach Ryan Osborn, lost in the title game in 2018 to Warren Central, but never trailed this time in beating its Metropolitan Interscholatic Conference rival for the second time this season.
John Michael Mulloy added 13 points for the winners (26-1), while Karsten Windlan netted 11 and Andrew Owens 10 points. Suder also had a game-high seven rebounds.
Though never leading in the game, Ben Davis (20-8) hung tough throughout and trailed only 44-43 after a Dawand Jones lay-up with 4:02 left.
The next time down, however, Owens canned a 3-pointer and the Giants never got closer than three points the rest of the way.
Jalen Windham led coach Don Carlisle’s Giants with 22 points and Jones added 16.
