Girls Swimming & Diving State Finals Preview: Penn’s Galat Looks for Third IM Crown
Carmel Girls Look to Extend Team Title Streak to 28 Years
Seven individuals with 19 state titles to their credit including four in individual events are among those participating in this weekend’s 40th Annual IHSAA Girls Swimming & Diving State Finals.
Preliminary swimming heats will begin Friday at 6 pm ET / 5 pm CT at the Indiana University Natatorium with the top 16 in each event returning Saturday for the championship and consolation finals scheduled for 1 pm ET / 12 pm CT. The state diving competition begins Saturday at 9 am ET.
Penn senior Bethany Galat is the lone multiple-year winner as the two-time defending champion in the 200 individual medley where she’s the third seed (2:03.01) after Saturday’s sectionals. She also added a state title in the 100 breaststroke a season ago and enters with the second-best time (1:02.07) in that event.
Carmel sophomore Claire Adams is the returning champion in the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle. She set the state record in the backstroke last year in 53.40 and went 54.92 in Saturday’s sectional entering this weekend as the second seed. Adams and classmate Veronica Burchill also distinguished themselves last year becoming the first freshmen to win four state championships.
Also returning is Zionsville senior Alex Cleveland, last year’s winner in the 50 freestyle and Sarah Bacon, a junior from Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter, the diving champ. Cleveland had the state’s second fastest time in last weekend’s sectional at 23.12.
A couple of records to keep an eye on are the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
During her sectional final on Saturday, Carmel junior Amy Bilquist cut through the 50 free water in 22.80, .10 faster than the official state record set in 1998 by Lacey Boutwell of Noblesville. Whether she can knock that record from the books on Friday or Saturday remains to be seen.
The 100 breast record of 1:00.12 and held by Center Grove’s Michelle McKeehan could be in jeopardy as well with junior Lillia King of Evansville Reitz and Galat, the defending champ, within striking distance. King went 1:00.80 and Galat 1:02.07 last Saturday. Galat’s winning time last year was 1:00.29.
As it does every year, Carmel is positioned favorably for yet another team title.
Already the longest active streak of state championships in any sport in the nation at 27 in a row, another title on Saturday would place Carmel all alone with the second-longest string in high school sports history. The Greyhounds are currently tied with Pickford (MI) High School’s boys track and field team which won 27 straight from 1952-78. Punahou High School’s (Honolulu, HI) 29 straight boys swimming championships from 1958-86 tops the national high school charts.
Two Crown Point individuals – junior Aly Tetzloff and freshman Hannah Kukurugya – are the top seeds in three events. Tetzloff has the state’s quickest time in the individual medley (2:02.10) and 100 butterfly (54.26) while Kukurugya tops the field in the 200 freestyle (1:48.80). The Bulldogs also had the fastest 200 medley relay (1:43.81) and 400 freestyle relay (3:24.39) at their sectional on Saturday.
Results will be posted throughout both days to IHSAA.org and tweeted at @IHSAA1. Saturday’s championship and consolation finals will be streamed live at IHSAAtv.org beginning at 1 pm ET / 12 pm CT.

All diving will take place on Saturday with the top 20 of 32 competitors advancing from the prelims to the semis after five dives each.
