GIRLS GOLF REGIONALS THIS SATURDAY
All seven of last year’s regional championship teams return for a repeat shot as players head to the regional round of the 37th Annual IHSAA Girls Golf State Tournament this Saturday. At each of the seven sites, the top three teams along with the top three individuals (including ties for third place) not with an advancing team will earn a spot in next week’s state finals at The Legends of Indiana in Franklin.

Carmel is one of those seven teams and leads the way after firing an unbelievable 294 last Saturday in taking the Ben Davis Sectional at South Grove Golf Course. The fifth-ranked Greyhounds shot the third-lowest score ever recorded in tournament history and just the fourth sub-300 performance in the state tournament. Only Western (291) in 2002 and Penn (293) in 2005 have put up better scores, both in sectional play.

The Greyhounds head to the Franklin Central Regional played at Smock Golf Course in Indianapolis where they will meet up with top-ranked Roncalli which claimed its fourth straight sectional crown following a 306 at Southern Dunes last Friday.

Second-ranked and 2007 state champion Martinsville (326) won its seventh straight sectional at Twin Bridges in runaway fashion and will compete at Foxcliff Saturday where the Artesians will be gunning for their sixth straight regional championship.

Defending state champion Hamilton Southeastern won its third sectional crown in four seasons with its 319 at Grandview in Anderson. The Royals will compete at Westwood in New Castle on Saturday.

Twin Lakes (362) continued its sectional dominance winning its 12th consecutive crown at Sandy Pines in DeMotte and added to the state’s longest active string in the sport. The Indians will go after their second regional title in three years Saturday at Beechwood in LaPorte.

Evansville North, which claimed its first sectional title since 1995 with a 312, ended Evansville Memorial’s (330) nine-year run at Fendrich. The Huskies will look to repeat as regional winner when they host the Saturday’s competition at Eagle Valley.

Beech Grove was the lone school to land its first girls golf sectional championship among the 28 winners. The Hornets shot a 367 to better the field at Old Oakland and feed into the regional at Smock.

Results from each site will be posted to the IHSAA website as they become available from the hosts. Also, barring any weather delays, pairings and tee-times for the state finals are scheduled to be available Sunday.

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE STATE
Have an interesting note? A conference or school record, coaching milestone or something else of interest? Please e-mail IHSAA Sports Information Director Jason Wille at jwille@ihsaa.org for consideration.

Carmel’s girls golf team fired a 294 in the Ben Davis Sectional last Friday at South Grove Golf Course in Indianapolis marking the third-lowest score in tournament history. Only Western (291) in 2002 and Penn (293) in 2005 have put up better scores. Both occurred in sectional play as well.

Kevin Leising was recently appointed head coach for the Bluffton boys basketball team following nine seasons as associate coach. Leising has 17 years of head coaching experience. He joined previous coach Wayne Barker's Bluffton staff in 2000. He spent 12 years as Bellmont head coach from 1986-1998. Before Bellmont, he coached three years at Hebron (1983-1986). In 1998, Leising left Bellmont to coach at Covington for two seasons. Barker recently resigned to become superintendent of the Bluffton-Harrison Metropolitan School District.
