News & Notes from Around the State
Have an interesting note? A conference or school record, coaching milestone or something else of interest? Please e-mail IHSAA Sports Information Director Jason Wille at jwille@ihsaa.org for consideration.

Sophomore Samantha Dewey scored seven goals in Triton Central's 13-0 victory over Greenwood Christian on Sept. 22 to break the single-season state record for most goals scored. Dewey’s 54 goals at the time surpassed the 52 set by Brown County's Kami Graber in 2010. She finished the regular season with 68 goals bettering the overall state record of 55 set by Merrillville's Vangel Nacovski in 2003.

The Eastern Lady Comets became the first team in conference history to score a perfect 15 points in the annual Mid-Indiana Conference girls cross country meet. Eastern had the top five runners in the conference to score the perfect cross country score. This is the fourth consecutive conference title for the sixth-ranked Comet harriers. Senior Bethany Neeley (the defending IHSAA 1,600 meter state champion) lead the girls with the conference’s fastest time at 18:43. Twin sister Brittany followed in second (19:49), Carly Jones was third (19:58), Avery Ewing was fourth (20:02) and Sarah Wagner was fifth (20:11) to round out the scoring.

Herron's 3-2 victory over Monrovia in the Class A boys soccer sectional at Speedway on Monday was the school's first sectional victory in any sport. Herron originally opened in 2003 and began competing in state tournaments four years ago.

Chesterton’s Marissa Kroeger showed great courage and integrity in calling herself out at Friday’s girls golf state finals. From Steve Gorches of the Gary Post-Tribune:

On Sept. 22, Elwood junior running back Sammy Mireles became the school’s all-time leading rusher as the Panthers beat Mississinewa. In 26 career games, Mireles has rushed for 4,203 yards and eclipsed the old mark established by his position coach, Chris Noone, who rushed for 4,171 yds from 1986-88.

From the Terre Haute Tribune-Star, North Central’s (Farmersburg) Chase VanSchoyck set the state record for rushing yards in a game last Friday: http://tribstar.com/highschoolsports/x1241989585/North-Central-fullback-surpasses-goal-with-record-effort
