FOOTBALL STATE TOURNAMENT PAIRINGS SHOWS THIS SUNDAY
First round sectional matchups in the 38th Annual IHSAA Football State Tournament presented by the Indianapolis Colts will be announced this Sunday (Oct. 10) beginning at 7 pm ET / 6 pm CT.

The state tournament pairings shows may be seen on television, heard on radio or viewed via webstream at the new ihsaatv.org.

Seven affiliates of the IHSAA Champions Television Network (listed below) will air the 90-minute show throughout the state originating from the Indianapolis studios of WTTV-4, the network’s flagship. Jerry Baker, Dick Dullaghan and Jeremiah Johnson will serve as hosts of the program.

Listeners also may tune into any of the 45 affiliates (listed below) of the IHSAA/Methodist Sports Medicine Championship Radio Network. Bob Lovell and Paul Condry will serve as hosts of that show originating from Emmis Communications on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis.

At approximately 8:30 pm ET / 7:30 pm CT, complete brackets will be available on the IHSAA website.

VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT DRAWING MONDAY MORNING
The IHSAA will conduct the blind draw for the 39th Annual Volleyball State Tournament on Monday (Oct. 11) beginning at 8 am ET / 7 am CT. Pairings will be e-mailed to IHSAA member schools and state-wide news media upon completion.

Sectional matches begin Tuesday, Oct. 19.

CROSS COUNTRY SECTIONALS TUESDAY
Sectional races in the 65th Annual Boys and 30th Annual Girls Cross Country Tournaments are scheduled for 32 sites on Tuesday, October 12. Regional competition is Saturday, Oct. 16, with semi-states one week later and the state finals at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute on Saturday, Oct. 30.

Columbia City edged No. 8 East Noble, 56-55, in a wild Northeast Hoosier Conference game that saw more than 1,200 yards of offense last Friday in Kendallville. Columbia City pulled to within 55-54 on quarterback Logan Rehrer’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Connor Slavich in the corner of the endzone with 10 seconds remaining. Then, following a timeout, Rehrer hit Jared Murphy near the sideline for the two-point conversion that helped put Columbia City into a four-way tie for the conference lead.

Leonard Drake, 56, who was hired as Evansville Central High School's athletics director in late June, passed away on September 29. Drake spent 33 years in college athletics, most recently as a women's basketball assistant at Eastern Michigan University. He previously was head coach of the men's team at Central Michigan, and was an assistant at Ball State. Drake is survived by his wife, Rhonda, a son, Jared, and a daughter, Enjoli.

Fort Wayne Canterbury captured its first sectional championship in boys tennis last Friday with a 5-0 victory over home-standing Homestead. The victory also ended Homestead’s 31-year stranglehold on the sectional title. It was the longest active streak in the sport and second longest in a boys sport behind Jeffersonville which has won 38 consecutive sectional titles in boys track and field.

Northview senior quarterback Trent Lancaster tied a state record (joining several other people) with eight touchdown passes in a 61-6 win over South Vermillion on Friday night. He now has 22 TD passes on the season.

In his team’s 43-28 victory over Martinsville last Friday, Roncalli junior Drew Oehrle (pronounced early) kicked five field goals tying the state record for most in a game set in 1998 by Mike Megyesi of Merrillville. Among Oehrle’s kicks were a 52 yarder and another from 51 yards. Oehrle actually made a sixth field goal in the game but Roncalli opted to take the points off the board after a defensive penalty was called on the play.
