Carmel Wins Six Events, Secures Another State Championship

Posted: February 26, 2022

Top ranked Carmel secured their eighth straight IHSAA Boys Swimming and Diving State Championship on Saturday, scoring 381 team points. Carmel was victorius in six events, taking first in the 100 Butterfly (Aaron Shackell), 100 Freestly (Sean Sullivan), 100 Breaststroke (Ryan Malicki), and all three relay events. The 200 Medley Relay team (Sean Sullivan, Ryan Malicki, Aaron Shackell, Christopher Holmes) set a national record in the event, finishing with a time of 1:26.88. 381 point is the second most all-time at an IHSAA state meet. One interesting note, their 400 Freestyle Relay team did not have a senior (Aaron Shackell 11, Gregg Enoch 10, Brandon Malicki 10, Sean Sullivan 11). We will see what they have in store next year.

Zionsville High School claimed the runner-up position this year tallying 247 team points. Junior Will Modglin had yet another successful weekend at the IU Natatorium as he defended his state titles in both the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Backstroke. Will also set a State Record in the 200 IM during Friday's Prelims with a time of 1:44.10. He will look to become a three-time state champion in both events next year. Zionsville had several high podium finishes, led by their 400 Freestyle Relay team (Will Modglin, Gabe Berry, Walker Mattice, Charlie Krone) and 200 Medley Relay team (Will Modglin, Jack Donovan, Charlie Krone, Will Raches) who both finished second. Junior Will Raches also finished second in the 100 Freestlye, while senior Charlie Krone took third in the 100 Butterfly.

A pair of seniors finished their high school careers off with a state championship. Senior Mitchell Schott of Culver Academies took first in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:35.48 and senior Kyle Ponsler of Fishers finished first in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 4:23.30.

Danville Community's Holden Higbee finished as state champion in One Meter Diving with a score of 535.75. Holden finished third last year. He'll have a chance to repeat next year as a senior.

Sophomore Matthew Klinge of Harrison (West Lafayette) was the quickest in 50 Freestyle on Saturday, finishing with a time of :20.43. He was the lone individual sophomore state champion of the weekend.

Crawfordsville's Horton named Mental Attitude Award recipient
Marshall Horton of Crawfordsville High School was named the recipient of the Herman F. Keller Mental Attitude Award following the meet by the IHSAA Executive Committee.

Horton competed in two events on Saturday, finishing 16th in both the 100 Freestyle and 200 Medley Relay. He is the member of three straight sectional swim championship teams and two straight Sagamore Conference championship teams at Crawfordsville. Marshall holds Crawfordsville's school record in the 100 Breaststroke. He also plays soccer and golf for Crawfordsville.

In the classroom, Marshall ranks first in his class and has been named Academic All-State for swimming in his junior and senior years. He is president of the Spanish Club, a three-year member of Key Club, and helped revive Crawfordsville's Recycling Club with the help of a few friends. Marshall was awarded the 2022 Lilly Endowment Scholarship for Montgomery County.

Marshall is the son of Bobby and Naomi Horton of Crawfordsville. He will be attending Notre Dame in the fall. He is undecdied on his major at the time but plans to study an area of Science.

Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior who was nominated by his principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s proud corporate partner, presented $1,000 to Crawfordsville High School's general scholarship fund in the name of Marshall Horton.

The award, renamed in 1974, honors Herman F. Keller, former IHSAA assistant commissioner who served the Association from 1961-73.
