Carmel student-athletes took first in the 400 meters and 1600 relay powering them to their fifth overall Boys Track and Field state championship and fourth in seven years. This year's state meet was held at Ben Davis High School after Indiana University was unable to host due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Carmel topped the field with 68 points, well ahead of runner-up Brownsburg with 40 and third-place Center Grove's 38.

Greyhound senior Owen Schafer bested the field in the 400 meters with a time of 48.36 and later teamed with Andrew Willman, Thomas Maurer and Colton Parker to win the 1600 relay in 3:18.90. Teammates Kole Mathison and Jacob Fisher finished second and third, respectively, in the 3200 meter run, and Parker added a second place finish in the 300 hurdles. William Anderson, Shammah Dosunmu, Kole Mathison, and Bingham Hudson also shared the baton to finish second in the 3200 relay.

There were no repeat winners from two years ago but one state record was set when junior Tucker Smith of Columbus North threw the shot put 67-11.25. That mark shattered the 24-year-old record of 66-8.5 set by Pike's Jeremy Allen in 1997.

Junior John Colquitt of Brownsburg swept the both hurdle events on Friday. He took the 110 high hurdles with a time of 14.53 and the 300 hurdles with a time of 37.84.

Warren Central also accounted for a pair of championships with Keon Perkin-Sullivan winning the discus with a toss of 179-9 and the 400 relay in 41.70 which was run by Mbye Manneh-Yillah, Otto De St. Jeor, Khalil Howard and Ahijah Sandifer.

The official attendance for Friday’s event was 5,375.

Trenton Heim of Avon High School Wins Hinshaw Mental Attitude Award
Members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Trenton Heim of Avon High School as the winner of this year’s Robert S. Hinshaw Mental Attitude Award in Boys Track and Field.

Heim competed in the 110 high hurdles in today’s finals, finishing fifth and also competed in the 300 intermediate hurdles. He was a member of the 2018 Avon state championship team.

In the classroom, Trenton ranked 24th in his senior class of 769 students. He is a National Honor Society member and a section leader in the Avon Marching Band. Heim is also an active member of the Boy Scouts of America, holding several leadership positions throughout the years.

The son of David and Dana Heim, Trenton will attend the University of Lousiville to major in Chemical Engineering.

The IHSAA Executive Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Avon High School in the name of Trenton Heim.
