Carmel Doubles Team, Bloomington South's Schneider Take Individual Crowns

Posted: October 23, 2010

One week after celebrating a state championship with their teammates, the Carmel doubles team of Chris Bertolini and Patrick O’Neill emerged the winners of the IHSAA state doubles tournament on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010 at Park Tudor School in Indianapolis.

Bertolini and O’Neill, both seniors, capped a 25-1 season with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Columbus North’s Adam Davis and Chase Harris in the final match. Davis and Harris finished 25-3. The Greyhound team earned a bye into the semifinal round after going unbeaten through the entire post-season including it’s 4-1 win over Brebeuf Jesuit for the team title one week ago. They took a 6-2, 6-2 decision from Penn’s Sean Anderson and Bradford Walter in Saturday morning’s semifinal round.

The singles state championship match saw Bloomington South sophomore Ronnie Schneider (26-0) capture a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win over defending state champion Dougie Barnard of Brebeuf Jesuit (26-2-1). In the decisive third set, Schneider and Barnard both held serve through the first six games but Schneider won the final three games after Barnard received treatment for a leg cramp. Barnard was attempting to become the first repeat singles champion in 22 years.

Schneider had defeated William Corrigan of South Bend St. Joseph’s, 6-0, 6-1, in Friday’s quarterfinals and then ousted Ben Bryan of Delta, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinals. Barnard defeated Collin Rigney of Greensburg, 6-3, 6-1, on Friday and then topped Guerin Catholic’s Michael Moe, 6-2, 6-0, to earn his spot in the final match.
