The Borden Braves claimed the school’s first softball state championship in a 5-3 victory over Frontier to start off the 32nd Annual IHSAA Softball State Finals at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis.
Head Coach Michele Schindler’s Braves with only nine players on this year's roster, jumped to an early lead in the first inning, capitalizing on two Frontier errors to score two early on. Junior Riley Schindler reached first on a bunt and later scored on a throwing error, and junior Haley Shouse was brought in by a single from sophomore Keisha Curry.
Borden tacked on two runs in the bottom of the third; with runners on second and third, Shouse and Riley Schindler both scored on a Frontier throwing error.
Frontier woke up the bats in the fifth inning, bringing in their first run courtesy of a Payton Clapper (freshman) single to center; she drove in classmate Jenna Breedlove to get the Falcons on the board. Frontier put up two more runs in the top of the sixth to cut into Borden’s lead; freshman Katelynn Hall singled to center to start things off for the Falcons, followed by a Breedlove single to short. Hall then advanced to third on a throwing error, and was brought home after senior Destinee Boatman grounded out to second. Junior Nicole Favre added to the cause, chipping in with a single to short to score Breedlove.
The Braves gave themselves a cushion in the bottom of the sixth, with Curry scoring on an RBI triple from sophomore Emily Parsons. It proved to be enough for Borden, as the Braves held through the final inning to take their first softball state title.
The Braves finished their championship season at 21-2; the Falcons and head coach Sharon Wright ended their season at 22-9.
