After matching zeroes for six innings, Boonville’s Jayce Purdy led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple and scored on the next pitch -- a squeeze bunt by Randi Jo Pryor -- to give the Pioneers a thrilling, 1-0 win over Guerin Catholic to claim the Class 3A state championship.

Purdy blasted her triple over the head of right fielder Kirsten Mascari, rounded second base then continued on to third, reaching just ahead of the throw. Pryor followed on the first pitch with a nubber up the first base line and Purdy slid in with the winning run.

To that point, second-ranked Guerin (25-3) had three times stranded the bases loaded as Boonville pitcher Ariel Thomasson allowed five hits and five walks. The Eagles finished with 11 left on base.

Guerin pitcher Izzy Kemp allowed just one hit and one walk prior to the decisive seventh inning. She struck out 13.

The 21-6 Pioneers thus win their second state championship (2006) for first-year coach Kalyn Chapman.

Anna Macha had two of the five hits for coach Jeff Buckner’s Eagles.

Boonville’s Randi Jo Pryor wins Class 3A Mental Attitude Award 
Members of the IHSAA Executive Committee announced Randi Jo Pryor of Boonville High School as the recipient of this year’s Mental Attitude Award in Class 3A Softball.

The award is annually presented to a senior participant in the state finals who best demonstrates mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability and is nominated by her principal and coach.

Randi Jo is a member of the National Society having graduated near the top of her senior class. She served as a class officer each of her four years finishing out her senior year as class president.

As a four-year softball player, she earned all-conference honors twice and played all four years for the Pioneers volleyball team.

Pryor is the daughter of Jaime and Brandon Pryor of Boonville, IN and will attend Indiana State University to play softball for the Sycamores. She is undecided on her area of study.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance presented a $1,000 scholarship to Boonville High School in the name of Randi Jo Pryor.
