Avon won its first state championship in any sport and Mishawaka Marian senior Adam Sumrall won the individual title at the 73rd IHSAA Boys Golf State Finals at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin.
After a rain-soaked first round on Tuesday, Avon (293-294-587) (+11) maintained its slim lead over Evansville North (296-293-589) (+13) on Wednesday to win by two strokes under very warm, sunny skies. Junior David Janney tied for 18th with 151 (74-77) and senior Tyler McGathney finished 59th at 173 (85-88).
A four-year state finals qualifier, Sumrall saved his best for last after finishing as the state runner-up by one stroke as a sophomore in 2007 and a 12th place finish last year. Sumrall started the day tied for 12th after an opening round 74 just making the individual cut. He recorded seven birdies on Wednesday, three on the back nine, to post a 140 (74-66) (-4) overtaking the first day leader Rodgers, who double bogeyed the 18th hole, and Evansville North junior David Mills (71-71) who tied for second. ADAM SUMRALL NAMED KEESLING MENTAL ATTITUDE WINNER
Following the tournament, Mishawaka Marian senior Adam Sumrall was selected as the winner of the Fred A. Keesling Mental Attitude Award by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.
The Committee presents the award to the outstanding senior participant during the state finals each year. The recipient of the award, who was nominated by his principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in boys golf. This award is named in honor of the late Fred A. Keesling, the longtime director of the IHSAA Boys Golf Tournament.
Sumrall won this year’s state tournament with a two-day score of 140 (74-76) (-6) and became the second Marian golfer to win the award following Cole Isban in 2003, who also won the state tournament. Sumrall was the 2007 state runner-up as a sophomore.
Besides golf, he played basketball for the Knights for four years earning three letters and leading the team in scoring for two seasons and also lettered in tennis last fall.
Academically, Sumrall graduated with a 4.34 GPA on a 4.0 scale ranking 11th in his class of 191 students. He has been a member of the National Honor Society where he was the vice president this year. He will attend Duke University in the fall where he plans to study business and play golf.
He is the son of Peter and Sue Sumrall of South Bend.
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s partner, presented a scholarship check for $1,000.00 to Mishawaka Marian High School in the name of Sumrall. Since 1989, more than $630,000 in college scholarships has been presented by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance to deserving high school students in Indiana.
