PERRY MERIDIAN WINS SECOND CONSECUTIVE TEAM WRESTLING STATE TITLE
Perry Meridian finished another perfect season (27-0) as head coach Jim Tonte and the Falcons celebrated at center mat with a 43-14 victory over Crown Point (23-1) in the 17th annual IHSAA Team Wrestling State Finals at Center Grove High School in Greenwood. The title is Perry Meridian’s second consecutive team wrestling title. The Falcons have finished runner-up four times (1991-92, 2001-02, 2003-04, and 2008-09).

The Falcons championship match was convincing, and the road to the title match was much of the same. Perry Meridian advanced to the championship round with a 52-19 quarterfinal victory over Warren Central. In the semifinals, Perry Meridian defeated Evansville Mater Dei 40-19. In the other semifinal Crown Point beat Indianapolis Cathedral 36-21.

The championship match started with the 106-pound weight class, where Perry Meridian sophomore Jacob Cottey won by first period fall over junior Brett Ervin. Cottey’s fall vaulted Perry Meridian to a 6-0 lead and never trailed in the final match.

Two freshman at 113 pounds, Brandon James defeated Crown Point's Darden Schurg in a decision 13-10 after jumping out to a 12-3 lead and hanging on for the victory.

After a scoreless first period at the 120-pound weight class, Perry Meridian sophomore Aidan Kenny broke the tie with a reversal in the second period. The third period started with sophomore Crown Point Josh Fuqua down 2-1, but with a reversal in the final minute he pulled out the victory by decision 3-2.

Crown Point sophomore Trevor Burlison and Perry Meridian sophomore Cody LeCount at the 126-pound class went the distance with Falcon Cody LeCount coming out on top with a 8-4 decision.

At 132-pound weight individual state champion Perry Meridian senior Jared McKinley jumped out to an 8-3 first period lead over Bulldog senior Cameron Halsted. The match ended in a technical fall (25-10) for McKinley.

The 138 pound class saw its second fall of the match as Falcon junior Nick Bova wasted no time pinning Bulldog junior Tyler Burlison in a mere 55 seconds.

At 145-pounds Bulldog senior and four-time individual state champion Jason Tsirtsis won by technical fall (19-4) over Perry Meridian junior Riley McClurg.

152-pound junior Paul Matthews of Perry Meridian went the distance with Crown Point senior Trevor Blue. Matthews pulled out the victory in a major decision 9-1.

The 160-pound weight class saw Falcon senior Kirk Johnson wrestle Bulldog senior Jake Fuqua to a 5-0 decision.

Bulldog junior Dustin Schurg moved up a weight class to wrestle in the 170-pound class to take on Perry Meridian junior Jake Masengale, but Masengale proved too much as he won by first period fall.

At 182-pound C.J. Martin of Perry Meridian won a major decision (9-1) over Crown Point junior Jacob Hazi.

Crown Point junior Matt Langbehn and DeVante Ash a senior at Perry Meridian met in the 195-pound weight class. Langbehn pulled out the match with a 10-4 decision.

Last week's 220 state champion senior Tyler Kral of Crown Point won a 7-0 decison over Perry Meridian senior Jordan Naughton.

The 285-weight class pitted Falcon junior Donte’ Winfield against Bulldog senior Josh Swope. Winfield won the final match with a 7-2 decision.

Meet the Teams

PERRY MERIDIAN CAPS PERFECT SEASON WITH TEAM WRESTLING STATE TITLE
Perry Meridian capped a perfect 28-0 season in overwhelming fashion with a 44-21 victory over Lawrence North (20-5). The title is Perry Meridian’s first-ever team wrestling title, the school’s first in a boys’ team sport, and sixth overall (Girls Gymnastics 1977-78, 1978-79, 1979-80, and 1981-82; Girls Track 1987-88).

After finishing runner-up four times (1991-92, 2001-02, 2003-04, and 2008-09), two of those coming to Lawrence North (1991-92, 2003-04), head coach Jim Tonte and the Falcons celebrated at center mat in the 16th annual IHSAA Team Wrestling State Finals at Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Indiana.

While the Falcons championship match was convincing, the road to the title match was much tougher. Perry Meridian advanced to the championship round with a close 35-27 quarterfinal victory over the sixth-ranked Roncalli. In the semifinals, Perry Meridian narrowly defeated fourth-ranked Penn 27-22 in a match that came down to the final pairing, where senior Sam Tasseff defeated Penn senior Mike Ham in a dramatic 10-9 decision.

The championship match began with the 285-pound weight class, where sophomore Donte Winfield won by fall in the third period over junior Deon Lockhart. Winfield’s fall vaulted Perry Meridian to a 6-0 lead and never trailed in final match.

103-pound freshman and individual state champion, Nathan Boston (Lawrence North), started strong with two takedowns in the first period followed by three more in the second. Boston dominated the match with a technical fall (18-3) over Wildcat freshman Jacob Cottey.

At 112-pounds, Perry Meridian freshman Cody LeCount defeated Wildcat sophomore Alex Sparks 13-4 after jumping out to a 9-4 second period lead.

At 119-pounds, Lawrence North junior Robert Boston defeated Falcon freshman Aidan Kenny, 4-0. Boston pulled ahead with a reversal halfway through the second period and added an early takedown in the third to seal the victory, 4-0.

Perry Meridian’s junior Jared McKinley, individual state champion at 125-pounds a week ago, struck quickly with a takedown in the first 30 seconds of the match and went on to defeat Lawrence North senior Rene Briseno with a first period fall.

Senior Jordan Johnson of Lawrence North defeated Perry Meridian sophomore and 2011 individual state finalist, Nick Bova, to capture the 130-pound class with a 6-0 victory. Johnson jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a takedown and near fall in the first period and held Bova in check during the scoreless second period. Johnson added another near fall as the match came to a close to hang on for the victory.

At 135-pounds, Falcon senior Joe Klinesmith defeated Wildcat senior Ricardo Briseno with near fall during the third period to notch a 9-2 decision.

140-pound senior Matthew Rattay, 3rd place finisher at the individual state finals a week ago, scored a major decision (22-10) over sophomore Danny Fagan of Perry Meridian.

Daulton Capps of Perry Meridan and Corey Gorman of Lawrence North headlined the matchup at the 145 lbs. Capps overpowered Gorman with the fall at 1:38 to once again widen Perry Meridian’s lead in the overall, 25-15, and really got things rolling in the right direction.

Falcon junior Kirk Johnson, the state’s 4th place wrestler at last week’s individual state tournament, and Lawrence North’s Nestor Castillo duked it out for the 152-pound class in the team state finals. Johnson cruised to a 8-0 major decision that extended the Perry Meridian lead 29-15.

In the 160-pound weight class, Perry Meridian senior Derek Harz was on a mission and defeated junior Damon Brooks of Lawrence North with a fall at 0:52. The victory sealed Lawrence North’s fate and gave Perry Meridian an insurmountable 35-15 lead.

The 171-pound match pitted Falcon sophomore Jacob Masengale of Perry against Lawrence North senior Brandon Douthitt. Masengale scored a second period reversal and a near fall in the final seconds to score a 13-7 decision.

Meet the Teams

MISHAWAKA TOPS YORKTOWN FOR TEAM WRESTLING STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Mishawaka capped a perfect 31-0 season in dominating fashion with a 37-17 victory over Yorktown (34-2) in the 15th Annual IHSAA Team Wrestling State Finals at Center Grove High School. The title is Mishawaka’s third overall and second in the last three years under coach Darrick Snyder in the dual format.

The formula for success was virtually the same as a week ago when top-ranked Mishawaka advanced an impressive 10 wrestlers to the individual state finals at Conseco Fieldhouse. Nine of those wrestlers earned medals including senior Paul Beck, a runner-up at 112-pounds, and senior Christian Lentz, a runner-up at 215-pounds. While the Cavemen had no individual champions, their impressive team depth vaulted them to a team title by capturing 10 of the 14 weight classes in the finals.

The championship match began with the 103-pound class, where Yorktown sophomore Brock Bevans notched a 9-7 victory over Mishawaka freshman Grant Martsolf.

Beck got things rolling for the Cavemen when he won in decisive fashion, an 11-1 major decision over Yorktown freshman Schuyler Phillips. Sophomore Layton Binion followed with a 6-2 decision over Yorktown’s Jake Anderson to put the Cavemen out in front 7-3.

The Tigers responded and made things interesting by grabbing a 11-7 advantage with a pair of major decisions by 125-pound senior Derek Bevans and 130-pound sophomore Devon Jackson. Jackson was an individual runner-up at 130-pounds a week ago.

135-pound senior, Matt Guerra, gutted out a 5-4 overtime decision over Tiger junior Andrew Hiestand that seemed to set the stage for what was to follow. Despite Guerra’s post-match celebration that resulted in a team point deduction, Mishawaka would go on to win the next seven matches in a row.

140-pound senior Anthony Eddy gave Mishawaka the lead back at 12-11 with a 7-1 win over Yorktown’s Josh Rench.

Junior Darius Marshall followed with an extremely hard fought 6-3 decision in the 145-pound match over Yorktown senior Cody Harper.

Caveman senior Ryan Stahl, was victorious in the 152-pound match with the championship round’s first fall that came in the third period over Tiger senior Caleb Smith.

In a high scoring affair, senior, Alex White continued the Caveman streak with a 13-10 decision at 160-pounds over Yorktown junior Andie Higgins.

The celebration officially began when 189-pound senior, Danny Abu-shehab, sealed the Mishawaka title with a fall over Yorktown senior Grant Brown.

At 215-pounds, Lentz finished his stellar career with a dominating 14-1 major decision over Yorktown junior Scott Neff.

Yorktown senior Ross Janney, the 285-pound state champion, closed out his perfect 55-0 season with a fast :31 fall over senior Travis Thomas.

In semifinal action, Mishawaka advanced to the championship round by defeating the third-ranked Perry Meridian (26-2), 41-15. Yorktown and head coach Trent McCormick advanced to the championship with a 30-27 victory over Castle (22-4) that was decided on the final pairing. Yorktown’s 215-pound junior Scott Neff gutted out a 7-2 decision over Castle’s Travis Daugherty.

Meet the Teams

CROWN POINT GRABS WRESTLING CROWN IN FIRST APPEARANCE
In just their first appearance at the team wrestling state finals, the Crown Point Bulldogs (21-1) defeated Perry Meridian, 33-25, to claim the 14th Annual IHSAA Team Wrestling State Championship at Center Grove High School in Greenwood. The championship is Crown Point’s fourth overall and first since girls basketball won championships in 1984 and 1985. Crown Point also captured the boys tennis title in 1971.

The championship match began with the 119-pound class, where Crown Point senior Josh Manes scored a 5-3 victory over Perry Meridian (25-3) junior Jason Simmons. Freshman Jason Tsirtsis flexed his muscles at 125-pounds with a 18-5, major decision victory over Falcon freshman Kirk Johnson to propel the Bulldogs to an early 7-0 lead. Perry Meridian battled back to cut the lead to 11-10 with a win from senior Sampson Cook and a fall by junior Jacob Tonte at 140-pounds. The Falcons gained additional momentum and the first lead of the evening, 13-11, when 145-pound senior Jacob Tasseff scored a hard fought 5-4 decision over Crown Point junior Tom Renn. Perry Meridian extended the lead to 16-11 when senior Blake Wood (PM) scored a 10-6 decision over senior Jeremy Pogorzelski (CP).

Trailing 16-11, Crown Point and head coach Scott Vlink turned the tables and the match with falls by Mark Myers at 160-pounds, Marcus Shrewsbury at 189-pounds and a decisive 26-second effort by Kyle Marshall at 285-pounds to put the Bulldogs in the lead for good, 29-22. 112-pound senior and individual state champion from a week ago, Anthony Hawkins, capped off the Crown Point victory in the evening’s last match with an 18-5 major decision win and the celebration began.

All three of Crown Point’s individual state champions from a week ago (112 lb. Anthony Hawkins, 125 lb. Jason Tsirtsis, and 189 lb. Marcus Shrewsbury) turned in perfect performances. Hawkins finished his junior season with an unblemished 45-0 record. Shrewsbury capped off an unbeaten, senior season with a trio of falls (:24, 1:10, and 1:31) to push his record to a perfect 45-0. Marcus will wrestle at Northwestern University next fall. And, Tsirtsis finished the season 43-2 in just his first season in a Bulldog singlet with three wins on the day.

The third-ranked Bulldogs (21-1) advanced to the championship round by winning a thriller over fourth-ranked Cathedral, 28-23, in a match that came down to the final pairing. With Crown Point leading 25-23, 103 lb. freshman Cameron Halsted outlasted Cathedral freshman Brian Harvey in the final match 2-1 to seal the semifinal victory, 28-23. Falls by Tsirtsis and senior Shrewsbury helped pace the Bulldogs.

Perry Meridian and head coach Jim Tonte advanced to the championship with close victories over Bellmont (31-27) and Castle (24-23). Falcon 103-pound freshman Jared McKinley recorded three victories on the day that included a fall in the Bellmont match and a technical fall versus Castle. McKinley was an individual state finalist and finished his freshman season with a record of 51-2.

MISHAWAKA CLAIMS SECOND WRESTLING STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
In a rematch of last year's championship match, third-ranked Mishawaka knocked off two-time defending state champion and top ranked Evansville Mater Dei, 28-22, to claim its second wrestling state championship at Center Grove High School in Greenwood.

The state title is the first for Head coach Darrick Snyder, and the first for Mishawaka since 1991. After appearing in the state finals for nine consecutive seasons, the Cavemen avenged last year's 31-18 championship match defeat against the Wildcats.

The Cavemen (31-1) advanced to the championship round by defeating second-ranked Perry Meridian, 29-24, in a closely contested first round match-up. Mishawaka was led in the match by senior Brandon Straub who was a winner by fall in 1:59. In the second round, the Cavemen defeated Merrillville, 30-22, thanks to a fall by junior Steven Sandefer and a technical fall victory by senior Brandon Mersich.

The championship match began with the 135-pound class, where Evansville Mater Dei junior Adam Weinzapfel defeated Mishawaka junior Joey Smith, 7-4, to give the Wildcats an early 3-0 lead. Mishawaka re-claimed the lead when 160 lb. junior Tim Forte defeated Mater Dei junior Zach Easterling in a tight 1-0 match. The victory gave the Caveman a 9-7 lead; one they would never relinquish. The Cavemen extended the margin with victories by 215 lb. senior Dave Balentine, 285 lb. senior Randy Morin, and 103 lb. sophomore Paul Beck, pushing their lead to 22-10. Evansville Mater Dei threatened by trimming the lead to 22-16 that featured back-to-back victories by 112 lb. senior Cody Moll and 119 lb. senior Alex Weinzapfel. Mishawaka was overcome with excitement when 125 lb. junior Josh Harper, a three-time individual champion, slammed the door on the Wildcats with a victory by fall over Mater Dei freshman John Sims. Harper's win sealed the match victory and the championship.

For 12-time champion, Evansville Mater Dei (23-2) and first year coach Greg Schaefer, it was their second runner-up finish (1987).

MATER DEI MAKES IT BACK-TO-BACK
Top-ranked Evansville Mater Dei notched their 12th overall wrestling state championship and second in a row with a 31-18 defeat of second-ranked Mishawaka at Center Grove High School in Greenwood.

It was the 12th overall state championship for Mater Dei, all of which have come under the guidance of Mike Goebel. Goebel holds the record for the most state titles in state history. Last year, Goebel broke the record he previously shared with Harold F. Mumby of Bloomington High School who won 10 titles from 1924 to 1945.

The Wildcats (25-0) cruised past eleventh-ranked Avon in the first round, 65-3, and were the beneficiary of three falls by juniors Cody Moll, Alex Weinzapfel, and Drew Lappe to defeat fourth-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral in the semifinals, 39-20.

With the championship round against Mishawaka beginning with the 160-pound class, Mater Dei junior Stephen Lovelace pinned Kurt Cauffman to give the Wildcats a quick 6-0 lead. The closest Mishawaka could get was 15-12 with a 3-1 overtime victory by 119-pound senior Nick Wiesjahn, but Mater Dei answered with a pin by 125-pound sophomore Zeke Zenthoefer to extend the lead 21-12. Mater Dei's 145-pound senior, Nick Dewig, sealed the state title with a 13-5 (major decision) victory to give the Wildcats a 10 point margin in the next to last match of the evening. Dewig, the 145-pound individual state runner-up, finished the season with a record of 48-1. Senior Chris DeWitt capped off the evening for Mater Dei with a 9-5 decision.

For Mishawaka (29-1), it was their second state runner-up finish. Both times, the Cavemen fell to Mater Dei (2000).

Meet the Teams

MATER DEI WRESTLERS BACK ON TOP
After two years of falling short at the team state finals, top-ranked Evansville Mater Dei returned to the pinnacle of Indiana high school wrestling defeating fifth-ranked Bellmont, 39-15, for the state championship at Center Grove High School in Greenwood.

The Wildcats (24-0) defeated second-ranked Perry Meridian in the first round, 25-23, and fourth-ranked Mishawaka in the semifinals, 31-25, in a pair of battles that went down to the wire.

It was the 11th overall state championship for Mater Dei, all of which have come under the guidance of Mike Goebel. With the title, Goebel became the coaching leader in terms of most state titles in state history. He previously held the mark with Harold F. Mumby of Bloomington High School who won 10 titles from 1924 to 1945.

With the championship round beginning with the 130 class, Mater Dei trailed 12-10 after the first six matches, but 171-pound senior Jeremy Goebel opened the floodgates with a 17-6 major decision that put his team in front 14-12. The Wildcats reeled off four straight and seven of the final eight matches. In the 189 pound match, sophomore Jacob Schneider and Sam Rich were knotted 1-1 going into the last minute before Schneider got a takedown and pinned his opponent with less than 30 seconds remaining. That result put Mater Dei in control of the match and they never looked back.

For Bellmont (25-2), it was their fourth state runner-up finish overall and their second since the team tournament came into existence in 1996. Both times, the Braves fell to Mater Dei (1999). Brent Faurote is the Bellmont coach.

LAWRENCE NORTH REPEATS AS STATE WRESTLING CHAMPION
Lawrence North won nine of 14 matches to win the team wrestling championship at the 10th Annual IHSAA Team Wrestling State Finals at Center Grove High School in Greenwood.

Coached by Brett Crousore, Lawrence North repeated as Indiana’s best wrestling team for the second straight season, defeating Portage, 34-21, in the first round, Evansville Mater Dei, 36-23, in the semis and Avon, 48-17, for the title to finish 29-0. They finished 29-1 during last year’s championship campaign.

It was the 47th consecutive dual meet victory for the Wildcats and adds another big trophy to their display case alongside those from 1992, 1993 and 2004.

By blind draw, all matches during the entire day started with the 160 pound class and wound their way through the lineup.

In the finals, Kris Boyden of Avon had just earned an 8-3 decision over Lawrence North’s Josh Leppink at 112 pounds to give the Orioles a 13-12 advantage and it appeared like they might challenge the defending champs, but then Lawrence North took control. The Wildcats got six straight pins from 119 to 145 pounds to wrap up the title. Senior Maurice Gunn pinned his heavyweight opponent and was followed by classmates Tyler Pino at 119, David Gans at 125, Michael Albert at 130, Reece Humphrey at 135, Zach Aspling at 140 and Thomas Johnson at 145, each of whom registered a fall as well. Humphrey completed his second straight perfect season at 51-0, a week after winning his third straight individual state title. Humphrey wrestled up in the 135 pound class in all three matches after winning the 130 pound state championship a week ago.

Avon, under the guidance of head coach Jared Williams, suffered its first dual loss since falling to Warren Central back on Dec. 4 and had won 20 straight matches to finish 24-2. The Orioles made it all the way to the title round in their very first trip to the state finals and avenged their earlier loss to the Warriors by eliminating them in the first round, 31-28. The defeated Columbia City in the semis, 33-18. Avon’s 215 pound state champ Lynn Panko won all three of his matches to finish his senior season 49-0.

Evansville Mater Dei’s Matt Coughlin won both his matches by fall to finish the year 44-0 after winning two consecutive state titles at 152 pounds.

In front of a capacity, standing-room-only crowd at Center Grove High School, Lawrence North High School rolled to its third IHSAA Team Wrestling State Championship on Saturday, February 28, 2004.

The Wildcats victory put an end to the string of nine consecutive team titles by Evansville Mater Dei. Mike Goebel’s team had won every championship since it became a separate event during the 1995-96 season, but fell in the quarter-finals, 29-23 to Portage.

Meanwhile, Lawrence North defeated Bloomington South, 44-18, in the quarter-finals, winning in nine of the 14 weight classes. The Wildcats then managed a 23-21 victory over Portage in the Semi-Finals in one of the highlight matches of the day, with the win decided by David Chandler’s exciting double-overtime triumph over Danny Martinez in the final match-up, in the 189-lb division.

The championship round was somewhat anti-climactic, as L.N. dominated Perry Meridian, 47-12, capturing wins in 11 weight classes and leading early on in the competition, 32-0.

For Lawrence North, coached by Brett Crousore, the 2004 trophy goes on the shelf with those garnered back-to-back in 1991-92 and 1992-93 under head coach Frank Svarczkopf, Jr. Perry Meridian grabs is third runner-up award, having also finished second in 1991-92 and 2001-02.

EVANSVILLE MATER DEI CAPTURES SEVENTH CONSECUTIVE TITLE
Top-ranked and undefeated Evansville Mater Dei won its seventh consecutive state championship in decisive fashion, posting three solid victories to complete a 21-0 season in the 2001 IHSAA Team Wrestling State Finals at Center Grove High School in Greenwood.

The Wildcats won four of the first five matches to gain control in the championship round against Portage on the way to a 40-16 victory. Earlier in the day, Evansville Mater Dei defeated Franklin 43-12 in the opening round and Lawrence North 40-15 in the semifinals.

Five Evansville Mater Dei wrestlers went 3-0 for the day. Those were Craig Macke (103 pounds), Dustin Nosko (125), Blake Maurer (130), Chad Raben (140 and 145), and Neil Reddington (171).

Portage (33-2), ranked fourth in the final coaches association poll at the end of the regular season, defeated Southmont 59-11 in the opening round and Mishwaka 35-22 in the semifinals. The Indians had four wrestlers who finished the day 3-0 -- David Persin (11), Darren Elkins (135), Jacob Cohen (189) and Scott Buhman (215).

Coached by Mike Goebel for each of its championships during the current run, Evansville Mater Dei extended its record string of IHSAA wrestling championship. The streak began in 1995 when the team title was decided on the basis of team points earned in the individual state meet. It has continued since 1996 under the dual-meet format now employed to determine the team championship. Evansville Mater Dei also won a state title in 1986.

EVANSVILLE MATER DEI WEINS SIXTH CONSECUTIVE TITLE
Top-ranked and undefeated Evansville Mater Dei won its sixth consecutive state championship in convincing fashion, posting three solid victories to complete a 25-0 season in the 2000 IHSAA Team Wrestling State Finals Feb. 26 at Center Grove High School in Greenwood.

Winning the first four matches and seven of the first eight, Evansville Mater Dei defeated Mishawaka 45-21 in the title round. The Wildcats reached the finals by eliminating previously undefeated Perry Meridian 46-12 in the first round and Portage 33-17 in the semifinals.

Five Evansville Mater Dei wrestlers went 3-0 for the day. Those were Craig Macke (103 pounds), Chad Raben (140), Allen Weinzapfel (160), Aaron Knight (171) and Jason Lewis (189). Weinzapfel registered all of his victories via fall, with no match lasting longer than 2:48.

Mishawaka (23-2) reached the championship round after ousting two opponents via tiebreaker procedures in the first round and the semifinals. In both, the Cavemen were declared the winner on the second tiebreaker, which awards the team victory to the school with more six-point (major decisions or pins) victories. Mishawaka had tied 26-26 with Bellmont in the opening round and by the same score with Franklin in the semifinals.

Coached by Mike Goebel for each of its championships during the current run, the Wildcats are the first team in Indiana history to win six straight wrestling state titles. The streak began in 1995 when the team title was decided on the basis of team points earned in the individual state meet. It has continued since 1996 under the dual-meet format now employed to determine the team championship. Evansville Mater Dei also won a state title in 1986.

Evansville Mater Dei's six-year title streak is the fourth longest in IHSAA annals in any sport. In the history of IHSAA-sponsored state tournaments, only five schools have won six or more consecutive titles in any sport. Those are: Carmel (14), girls swimming 1986-2000; Gary Roosevelt (9), boys track and field, 1981-1989; Anderson (7), boys cross country, 1946-1952; Gary Froebel (6), boys track and field, 1928-1933; Hammond (6), boys swimming and diving, 1939-42 and 1950-52. Hammond's title run was interrupted by a period when a state tournament was not conducted.

EVANSVILLE MATER DEI ESCAPES UPSET BID; WINS SIXTH TITLE
Evansville Mater Dei survived a semifinals upset bid by Hobart and went on to successfully defend its state championship Feb. 27, 1999 with a 35-21 victory over Bellmont in the Fourth Annual IHSAA Team Wrestling State Finals at Center Grove High School in Greenwood.

Senior Nick Miller's pin of Ryan Whitman at 1:16 in their 160-pound championship round match gave Evansville Mater Dei a lead at 23-18 that it would not relinquish. The Wildcats clinched the title by winning the 189-pound match.

It was the fourth straight title for Evansville Mater Dei (25-0) in the dual-meet team tournament format and its fifth straight overall. The Wildcats have collected six IHSAA wresting titles, with all coming since 1986 and under the guidance of coach Mike Goebel.

Ranked No. 1all year by the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association poll, Evansville Mater Dei came back from a 30-12 deficit after the 152-pound match to pull out a 33-30 victory over Hobart in the semifinals. The Wildcats won the last five matches, including the 152, 215 and 275 weights by fall. In the first round, Evansville Mater Dei eliminated first-time state finalist Elwood 56-13.

Bellmont (22-2) won the last four weights to defeat Franklin 28-24 in the first round. It was the third time in four years the Braves had downed Franklin in the opening session. Bellmont went on to oust LaPorte 35-27 in the semifinals, forfeiting the last four matches to rest its upper weight participants after clinching the victory with a fall at 160.

EVANSVILLE MATER DEI WINS THIRD STRAIGHT TEAM CROWN
Evansville Mater Dei successfully defended its championship and made it a three-peat in the Third Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Team Wrestling State Finals Feb. 28, 1998 at Center Grove High School in Greenwood.

Top-ranked all season in the Indiana Wrestling Coaches Association poll, Evansville Mater Dei took out 1997 state runner-up Penn 41-19 in the opening round, followed with a 41-21 semifinals triumph over Lawrence North and concluded with a 48-10 victory over Portage by winning 11 of the 14 matches.

It was the fifth title overall for the Evansville Mater Dei, all under the guidance of coach Mike Goebel. The championships in 1986 and 1995 came under the former tournament format that was decided as part of the individual wrestling state finals. The IHSAA implemented the dual-meet team format in 1996.

EVANSVILLE MATER DEI WINS TEAM WRESTLING STATE TITLE
Evansville Mater Dei won the first six matches and nine of the first 12 to successfully defend its state title with a 32-18 triumph over Penn in the championship round of the Second Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Team Wrestling State Finals March 1, 1997 at Center Grove High School in Greenwood.

Coached by Mike Goebel, the Wildcats finished the season 24-0. It was their third straight team state championship in wrestling and the fourth overall.

Evansville Mater Dei had advanced by defeating New Castle 39-16 in the first round and Carmel 31-24 in the semifinals. The triumph over New Castle was a rematch of the 1996 state finals.

Penn nipped Franklin 30-29 in the first round after trailing 12-9 through the first six weights. The Kingsmen won the next three matches and picked up 15 points in the process to take control. Penn came back to defeat Portage 41-23 in the semifinals.

The other first-round matches saw Portage defeat Clinton Central 45-22 and Carmel stop Wawasee 44-15.
