Hamner's Hat Trick delivers Memorial its Repeat Crown
Led by a hat-trick by senior Ella Hamner, top-ranked Evansville Memorial captured its second-straight Class 2A girls state championship with a 4-0 win over Leo.
Hamner, a senior, scored twice in the first half and added her third goal in the 53rd minute to tie a state finals individual record for goals in a game. Heritage Christian’s Abby Foulk also scored three goals in the Class 1A championship game in 2021. All three of Hamner’s goals were unassisted.
In repeating as champs, the Tigers claimed their sixth state title in program history – the last five under coach Angie Lensing. Memorial (22-0-1) also finished the season as the state’s only unbeaten team, girls or boys.
The shutout, by freshman goalkeeper Emma Teague, was the 15th straight on the season as Memorial hadn’t allowed a goal since a Sept. 3rd game against Sacred Heart – a 2-1 victory. The Tigers and Teague allowed only four goals all season. She recorded three saves in the title game.
Myla Browning netted the other Evansville Memorial goal on an assist from Ashlyn Nobles.
Leo, coached by Mike Bitler, was making its first state finals appearance and finished the season 18-5.
