Barr-Reeve Rallies in Fourth Set to Claim Second Crown
After a roaring start to the match, Barr-Reeve overcame a late, two-point deficit in the fourth set to pull out a 3-1 (25-13, 13-25, 25-22, 26-24) victory over Pioneer in the Class A state championship match.
The Vikings of coach Amber DeCoursey thus claimed their second state championship in school history after also winning in 2013.
Barr-Reeve (34-5) roared out to a 10-1 lead in the opening set before claiming the win, only to see Pioneer come back strong in set two to even the match.
After Barr-Reeve took a 2-1 lead by winning set three, the teams fought to a 17-17 tie in set four. Pioneer recorded two straight points at that point and kept that advantage to set point at 24-22. However, Hailey Raber’s kill started a decisive, four-point rally by Barr-Reeve which ended with two straight kills by Addison Ainscough to end the match.
Anna Ballengee led the winners with 23 kills and Ainscough added 12. Pioneer, making its first-ever state finals appearance, got 13 kills from Alexis Robinson.
The Panthers of coach Rod Nies finished 30-10.
Pioneer's Haley Gleitz earns Mental Attitude Award
At the conclusion of the state finals, the IHSAA Executive Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, named Haley Gleitz of Pioneer Junior-Senior High School as the winner of the Class A Mental Attitude Award.
She becomes the fourth female from her school and eighth athlete overall to win an IHSAA Mental Attitude Award from Pioneer High School.
Gleitz has earned a 3.7 GPA and is in the top 15% of her senior class academically. She has demonstrated her willingness to help others through volunteering on Live United Day, baking cookies for Wounded Warriors, washing the Royal Center fire truck, and painting Royal Center fire hydrants. Haley is the President of the Pioneer High School Pep Club and is Secretary of Pioneer’s National Honor Society. Haley is also a member of the girl’s basketball team and was the starting secondbaseman on the Panthers' state championship softball team last spring.
Haley is the daughter of Brad Gleitz and Amber Walker. She plans to attend Butler, IU, or IUPUI to study obstetrical or pediatric nursing.
Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior player who was nominated by her principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, presenting sponsor of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in Class A Volleyball, will donate $1,000 to Pioneer’s general scholarship fund in the name of Haley Gleitz.

North Judson-San Pierre Sweeps to First State Title in any Sport
In the school’s first ever appearance in the state finals, North Judson-San Pierre made it count with a 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-21) victory over Christian Academy of Indiana in the Class 2A championship match.
North Judson senior Lauren Cox overcame a bloody nose (as a result of a dive on the floor) to record 21 kills and 19 digs, while teammate Macy Reimbold added 17 kills and 13 digs to lead the way.
The match turned in set two as CAI, making its fifth-straight appearance in a state final match, held leads of 15-9 and 17-12, only to see the Bluejays rally for a 17-17 tie. The teams traded points until North Judson (27-7) finally took the lead at 26-25 and claimed set point when a Warriors return sailed long.
In set three, CAI had a lead as late at 18-16, but North Judson rallied again and took the lead for good on Reimbold’s serve at 19-18. The Bluejays, of first year coach Madison Fingerhut, wrapped up the match with the final two points on Cox’s serve.
Coach Wes Briscoe’s Warriors (20-10) got 12 kills from Lexi Lester and 21 digs from Kenzie Carter. The Warriors won the title in 2015 and have finished as runner-up the other four appearances.
North Judson-San Pierre’s Lauren Cox named Mental Attitude Award winner
At the conclusion of the state finals, the IHSAA Executive Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, named Lauren Cox of North Judson-San Pierre High School as the winner of the Class 2A Mental Attitude Award.
She becomes the first female student-athlete from North Judson to receive an IHSAA Mental Attitude Award and the first Bluejay since Matt Vessely won for Class A football in 1986.
Lauren ranks third in her senior class academically and is an active member of North Judson’s Student Council and National Honor Society. She is a member of HIVE, a women’s giving circle in Starke County. She also volunteers her time at the Kids Closet in Starke County and at numerous youth athletic camps for future North Judson students. She was Hoosier North Conference Player of the Year in 2017 and 2018, as well as an Academic All State in 2018. Lauren is also a member of North Judson’s basketball team where she was Hoosier North All-Conference last season.
Lauren is the daughter of Kevin and Andrea Cox of North Judson and she plans to attend Ferris State University to play volleyball following graduation.
Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior player who was nominated by her principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, presenting sponsor of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in Class 2A Volleyball, will donate $1,000 to North Judson’s general scholarship fund in the name of Lauren Cox.

New Castle Sweeps Northview to Repeat as 3A Champions
New Castle captured its second straight Class 3A state championship with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-14) dismantling of Northview.
Coach Sarah Roush took over the New Castle program this season after the Trojans topped Brebeuf Jesuit for last year’s title. In capturing their third state title overall (the Trojans won Class 4A in 2007), New Castle did so with a roster of only two seniors.
Sophomore Mabrey Shaffmaster led the Trojans (35-5) with a Class 3A state finals record 28 kills, while sister Melani Shaffmaster, a junior, had 36 assists, giving her 1,029 for the season.
After a close first set, coach Erica Garrison’s Northview squad (36-3) took a 14-10 lead in set two before New Castle took over. The Trojans broke out to a 13-5 lead in set three and rolled to the victory.
Jenny Lundy led the Knights (who were also runners-up in 2014) with 13 kills, while Kambree Lucas had 11 assists and 12 digs. Northview entered the match on a 21-match winning streak, having won 59 of the previous 61 sets played.
Madeline Sinders of Northview selected for Mental Attitude Award
At the conclusion of the state finals, the IHSAA Executive Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, named Madeline Sinders of Northview High School as the winner of the Class 3A Mental Attitude Award.
Sinders is the third student athlete from Northview to receive an IHSAA Mental Attitude Award and the first since 1994.
Academically, Madeline ranks in the top 15% of her senior class and was a 2017 Academic All-Conference member. She is the Advanced Choir President, an ambassador of Northview’s National Honor Society, and a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Madeline also takes time to coach youth volleyball at her local YMCA, as well as at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum. Madeline is widely recognized for her singing as she has been named All-State Choir three times, All-State Jazz Choir twice, and is a three-time Gold Medalist for ISSMA District and State Solo competitions. Madeline sang the National Anthem for the 2017 IHSAA Girls Basketball State Finals and has also sang at Indiana State University basketball games.
In addition to volleyball, she is also a member of the Northview track and field team.
Madeline is the daughter of Darby and Cathy Sinders of Brazil, Ind. and plans to study Music Therapy at Indiana Wesleyan University.
Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior player who was nominated by her principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, presenting sponsor of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in Class 3A Volleyball, will donate $1,000 to Northview’s general scholarship fund in the name of Madeline Sinders.

Yorktown Sweeps Avon to Complete Perfect Season
Yorktown completed a perfect season in the Class 4A championship match, claiming its second title in three years with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-21) win over defending-champion Avon.
The Tigers finish 34-0, making it the first perfect season since Cathedral took the Class 4A title with a 36-0 mark in 2015.
Yorktown senior Kenzie Knuckles closed out set one and the final set with a kill. She led the Tigers’ hitting parade with 14 kills and also had 10 digs. Kylie Murr led the Tigers with 18 digs.
Avon (33-4) had a lead as large as four points in set two, but couldn’t hold on. In the final set, the Orioles were tied at 7-7, but the winners recorded the next two points and never trailed again.
Abby Maesch led Avon with 13 kills and Ava Torrance had 18 digs.
The title marks the fourth in school history for Yorktown, which also won in 2000, 2011, 2016 and the first in Class 4A for the Tigers. Coach Stephanie Bloom also guided the team to the titles in 2011 and 2016.
The Orioles were seeking to join 3A winner New Castle as back-to-back titlists in coach Amie Sherrod’s first year. Avon also won titles in 2012 and 2013.
Avon’s Chloe Rickenbach earns Mental Attitude Award
At the conclusion of the state finals, the IHSAA Executive Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, named Chloe Rickenbach of Avon High School as the winner of the Class 4A Mental Attitude Award.
Chloe is the third Avon volleyball student athlete since 2012 awarded with an IHSAA Mental Attitude Award and the 10th student athlete overall. Academically, she ranks in the top 20% of her senior class of 825 students. Her academic record consists of multiple AP courses and participation in Project Lead the Way, a rigorous biomedical science program that exposes students to real-world biomedical challenges. She is also a member of Avon’s National Honor Society. Chloe has spent time volunteering at a local doctor’s office, caring for adults and children with neurological disorders, and is a guest reader at an Avon elementary school.
Chloe was also a starter on last year’s volleyball state championship team and a 2018 All-Hoosier Crossroads Conference Team member. She has ranked first or second in both digs and aces in 2017 and 2018, all after rehabilitating from a torn ACL her sophomore year.
Chloe is the daughter of Chris and Leah Rickenbach of Avon and plans to study Architecture at Ball State University where she has received a scholarship to play volleyball.
Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior player who was nominated by her principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, presenting sponsor of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in Class 4A Volleyball, will donate $1,000 to Avon’s general scholarship fund in the name of Chloe Rickenbach.
