Top-ranked Lafayette Central Catholic Sweeps to Second State Title
After rallying for the final three points of the first set, Lafayette Central Catholic rolled to a 26-24, 25-18, 25-15 victory over Hauser in the Class A championship match.
Central Catholic (30-5) thus captured its second-ever state title (2010) after falling in the championship match in both 2013 and 2015.
Hauser (35-5) hung tough in the opening set and led, 24-23. The Knights, however, rose up to stave off match point and pull out the win. Central Catholic then opened game two with the first five points and never trailed to go up, 2-0.
In the final set, Hauser led, 7-6, but the Knights took command from there, scoring four straight points for a 10-7 lead and romping to the victory. With sophomore Jozee Evans serving, LCC reached match point on a tip-kill by Maddie McPherson before 6-foot junior Gretchen Kuckkan's kill ended the contest.
Kuckkan led LCC with 21 kills and three aces, while Evans had 14 kills along with nine digs. Sami Royer finished with 38 assists.
Hauser got 10 kills from senior Maddie Sherman. Teammate Sarah Tedder had four kills and 17 digs.
Hauser’s Sydney Schoen named Mental Attitude Award Winner
At the conclusion of the state finals, the IHSAA Executive Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, named Sydney Schoen of Hauser Junior-Senior High School as the winner of the Class A Mental Attitude Award.
She becomes the first girl from her school and third overall to win an IHSAA mental attitude award joining Jacob Miller (2005 1A Baseball) and Jordan Perkins (2006 1A Boys Basketball).
Schoen ranks first in her senior class academically. She is involved in the school’s Student Council and National Honor Society and is a Bartholomew County finalist for the Lilly Endowment Scholarship.
Besides playing four years of volleyball, she has been a member of the Jets’ track team and was regional qualifier in the long jump and has been All-Mid-Hoosier Conference in softball the last two seasons.
Sydney is the daughter of Jerry and Becky Shoen of Columbus. She has accepted a volleyball scholarship from Eastern Kentucky University where she plans to study business.
Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior player who was nominated by her principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, presenting sponsor of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in Class A Volleyball, will donate $1,000 to Hauser’s general scholarship fund in the name of Sydney Schoen.

Andrean Sweeps to First Volleyball State Title
In its first-ever appearance in the state championship match, Andrean survived a strong rally by Christian Academy of Indiana in the third set to claim a 25-20, 25-18, 26-24 win.
Coach Grant Bell's 59ers used a 23-kill, 13-dig performance by senior Jenna Dal Santo to key the victory as Andrean finishes the season 30-8.
Dal Santo had eight kills in set one as Andrean broke from a slim, 17-15 lead to take the 1-0 lead. Set two proved similar as the 59ers held only a 16-14 lead before dominating the final points. Grace O'Brien and Lauren LeGrand recorded the final two kills to close out the set.
In the final set, Andrean held a 15-10 lead, but the Warriors, the 2015 Class A champs who were playing up a class and making their fourth-straight appearance in a title match, rallied to take leads of 20-19 and 24-23. The winners, however, evened the match on a kill by Vanessa Brown, then closed the match with a pair of CAI attack errors.
Dal Santo hit a superb .380 in the match. O'Brien had three aces and five blocks.
For first-year coach Wes Briscoe's Warriors (34-6), Alli Stumler had 20 kills and 11 digs.
Alli Stumler named Mental Attitude Award Winner
At the conclusion of the state finals, the IHSAA Executive Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, named Alli Stumler of Christian Academy of Indiana as the winner of the Class 2A Mental Attitude Award.
Stumler becomes the first student-athlete from her school to be honored with an IHSAA mental attitude award.
She has carried a 3.7 GPA and has been involved in and held leadership positions in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and National Honor Society among others. In addition to four years of volleyball, she has also served as team captain for the girls basketball team and will also be playing softball this spring.
Involved in countless community service projects, she will make her third mission trip to Honduras later this year and plans to pursue a lifelong dream of opening and running an orphanage for needy children.
Alli is the daughter of Sean and Jenny Stumler of Floyds Knobs and plans to study Early Education at the University of Kentucky where she will also play volleyball for the Wildcats.
Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior player who was nominated by her principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, presenting sponsor of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in Class 2A Volleyball, will donate $1,000 to Christian Academy’s general scholarship fund in the name of Alli Stumler.

New Castle Sweeps to Class 3A State Championship
After a 10-year gap, it took just over one hour for New Castle to return to the top of the heap at the Class 3A state final, beating upstart Brebeuf Jesuit, 25-11, 25-20, 25-15.
New Castle won the Class 4A title in 2007 and hadn't qualified for a state final since. However, with only three seniors on the roster, it may not be the last for coach Matt Curtis' Trojans.
Sophomore Zoe Conway opened sets one and three with an ace and the top-ranked Trojans (34-6) never trailed in either set.
Brebeuf, which has only two seniors on its roster, did put up a fight in set two, breaking out to a 6-2 lead and still led, 18-16. That's when New Castle freshman Mabrey Shaffmaster stepped up, converting two kills to give her team a lead it didn't relinquish.
Shaffmaster finished with 19 kills and a tremendous .630 hitting percentage, while her sophomore sister, Melani, added 13 kills and a .545 percentage. For the match, New Castle hit .494 as a team.
Talia Trabue led coach Brian Murray's Braves, who entered the tournament unranked, with nine kills, while Abbey Richman recorded nine digs. Brebeuf finishes 29-10.
Grace Roudebush named Mental Attitude Award Winner
At the conclusion of the state finals, the IHSAA Executive Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, named Grace Roudebush of Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School as the winner of the Class 3A Mental Attitude Award.
Academically, Roudebush ranks sixth in her senior class with a 4.33 GPA, is a member of the National Honor Society and the Ignatian Scholars Program, the school’s academic/leadership/service program. She is also editor for the school yearbook and has been involved in a host of community service projects including Special Olympics and tutoring nearby elementary school students.
In addition to volleyball, she has been a four-year member of the school’s swimming and diving team and was a state finalist in the 200 freestyle relay last winter.
Grace is the daughter of Ryan and Claire Roudebush of Indianapolis and plans to study Molecular Biology and Neuroscience at Vanderbilt University.
Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior player who was nominated by her principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, presenting sponsor of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in Class 3A Volleyball, will donate $1,000 to Brebeuf Jesuit’s general scholarship fund in the name of Grace Roudebush.

Avon Sweeps Crown Point for 4A State Championship
Avon recaptured glory, winning its third state title in six seasons, while sending Crown Point down to heartbreak for the second straight season.
The Orioles (37-3) scored a 25-17, 25-18, 25-18 victory in the Class 4-A title match as Holly Eastridge (13) and Jael Johnson (12) combined for 25 kills.
The match turned in the opening set when, with Avon leading, 15-12, Crown Point's top hitter, Morgan Chacon went down with an apparent leg injury. Chacon remained on the floor for several minutes with visibly upset teammates standing by. Chacon, one of the state's top 25 players in total kills and hitting percentage, was wheeled off on a stretcher and didn't return. She still finished with a team-tying high of six kills.
Avon wrapped up the first set on a kill by Johnson. In set two, the Orioles trailed, 13-12, before going on a 7-1 run to take control. The final set was tied, 12-12, when the Orioles surged again. An Eastridge kill brought Avon to match point and a Crown Point hitting error finished it.
Coach Scott McQueen also guided Avon to state titles in 2012 and 2013.
The Bulldogs (35-4), coached by Alison Duncan, settled for the runner-up spot for the second straight year. Crown Point fell to Indianapolis Cathedral in 2016.
Alex Equihua named Mental Attitude Award Winner
At the conclusion of the state finals, the IHSAA Executive Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, named Alex Equihua of Crown Point High School as the winner of the Class 4A Mental Attitude Award.
Alex is the sixth Crown Point student athlete honored with an IHSAA mental attitude award and the second in the last five months following Alexis Holloway (4A softball) last June.
With a 3.6 GPA, Equihua is involved in the school’s Best Buddies program, National Honor Society, Cass, Junior Rotary and the Bulldogs’ Athletic Council.
As a team captain and school record holder in assists, she helped guide the Bulldogs to back-to-back appearances in the 4A state championship match. She is a two time All-State volleyball selection as a setter.
Alex is the daughter of Anne and Art Equihua of Crown Point and plans to study Athletic Training at the University of Indianapolis where she will play volleyball for the Greyhounds.
Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior player who was nominated by her principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, presenting sponsor of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in Class 4A Volleyball, will donate $1,000 to Crown Point’s general scholarship fund in the name of Alex Equihua.
