Plainfield wins first ever Boys Track and Field State Championship
Plainfield High School took home gold on Saturday, finishing first with 61 total team points. The Quakers were led by two State Champions on the evening. Junior Nayyir Newash-Campbell won the 400-meter run with a time of 47.45 and Junior Bode Gilkerson out jumped the field in the High Jump, reaching 6-09. Adding to their point total, Junior Harrison Hrbek finished third in the 110-meter hurdles, Nayyir Newash-Campbell finished third in the 200-meter dash, while Plainfield's relay team of Troy Larrison, Harrison Hrbek, Connor Maple, and Ken Ohaya took second in the 4x100. The 4x400 relay team of Nayyir Newash-Campbell, Troy Larrison, Jeremiah Dukett, and Harrison Hrbek also finsihed second. A total team effort from the Quakers to secure the State Championship.
The Brownsburg Bulldogs finished as State Runner-up for the second straight year. They were led by Senior John Colquitt, who defended his state title in both the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 13.90 and 37.92 respectively. Brownsburg also won the 4x100 Relay State Title on Saturday, posting a time of 41.60. The relay team consisted of Zemonda Wilson, Dominic Calhoun, John Colquitt, Deandre Cooper.
Carmel Junior Kole Mathison was State Champion in two events on the evening, finishing first in the 1600-meter run and 3200-meter run. He flirted with State Record times in both, posting a 4:04.82 in the 1600 and 8:59.05 in the 3200.
Several seniors ended their high school career on a high note Saturday evening. Anthony Brodie of Evansville Memorial was the quickest in the 100-meter dash, finishing with a time of 10.57. Westfield Shamrock Kai Connor won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.84. Kemari Robinson of Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter bested the field in the 200-meter dash, posting a time of 21.49. Ben Davis Giant Antoine Cooper Jr. won discus with a throw of 172-06. Piere Hill of Portage High School jumped further than his peers, reaching 23-04.75. Finally, Tucker Smith of Columbus North defended his State Title in the Shot Put, throwing for 66-06.75.
Hobart High School landed a second straight Pole Vault State Championship when Cody Johnston reached 16-08. His brother Riley won the Pole Vault title last year.

Leo Maxwell of East Central High School Wins Hinshaw Mental Attitude Award
Members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Leo Maxwell of East Central High School as the winner of this year’s Robert S. Hinshaw Mental Attitude Award in Boys Track and Field.
Heim competed in the Shot Put in today’s finals, finishing fifth. Leo also finished fourth in Shot Put and second in Discus at the 2021 Boys Track and Field State Meet. He is currently the School Record holder in both at East Central.
In the classroom, Trenton ranked 81st in his senior class of 291 students. He is a National Honor Society member and a member of the Exemplary Honor Roll. Leo has volunteered his time assisting with the North Dearborn Food Pantry and East Central's Youth Football Programs. Leo also helped construct new shot put and discus arenas at East Central.
The son of John and Robin Maxwell, Leo will attend Purdue University to study Kinesiology and participate in their Track and Field program.
The IHSAA Executive Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, presented a $1,000 scholarship to East Central High School in the name of Leo Maxwell.
