Young powers Princeton past Tippecanoe Valley in Class 3A

Posted: March 7, 2015

The Princeton Tigers captured the Class 3A girls state championship on the strength of junior Jackie Young's formidable talents.

Young scored a record 36 points on 15-of-22 shooting from the field and grabbed 12 rebounds  to boost the Tigers to a 72-44 victory over the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings. Young's 36 points  represented a new standard for Class 3A -- and for all classes since the advent of the multiple-class system in 1997-98.

Young, the state's second-leading scorer this season with a 31.9 average, also surpassed the 1,000 mark this season, totaling 1,003 points to become the first girl to reach that milestone and the fifth player in Indiana high school basketball history. Brooke James was the only other Princeton player in double-digit scoring in the state final, totaling 15. James scored the final 13 points of the first half and pushed the Tigers to a 38-22 halftime lead.

Coach Charles Mair's Tigers, ranked fourth by the ICGSA, finished the season at 30-1. The triumph was the first state championship for the Princeton girls basketball team and the second in school history joining the 2009 3A boys basketball state title team.

Coach Chris Kindig's Tippecanoe Valley team, ranked ninth, was making its first appearance in the girls state finals. The Vikings, who won their first regional and semi-state crowns this season, finished 25-3.

Anne Secrest led the Vikings with 18 points and nine rebounds. Taylor Trippiedi had 11 points and five rebounds.

Tippecanoe Valley’s Taylor Trippiedi named Mental Attitude Award Winner
Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Taylor Trippiedi of Tippecanoe Valley High School as the winner of the Patricia L. Roy Mental Attitude Award in Class 3A Girls Basketball.

The award is presented annually to a senior participant in each classification who was nominated by her principal and coach and has demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability.

In addition to excelling on the basketball and tennis courts, Taylor also shines in the classroom.  She carries a 3.9 GPA and is ranked 4th in her class.  Taylor is an active member in her church as well as an avid volunteer in her community.  She’s also been on five mission trips to Honduras where she assists with feeding those in need.

She is the daughter of Dean and Alissa Trippiedi of Warsaw and plans to become a Physician’s Assistant at either Butler University or the University of Saint Francis next fall.

The Indiana Fever and Indiana Pacers, the presenting sponsor of the IHSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Tippecanoe Valley High School in the name of Taylor Trippiedi. Since 1989, more than $840,000 in college scholarships have been presented to deserving high school athletes in Indiana.

The award is named in honor of the former IHSAA assistant commissioner Patricia L. Roy, who oversaw the girls basketball state tournament from its inception in 1976 until her retirement in 1999.
