Fourth-ranked Westfield shot a two-round state finals record to win its first state championship in boys golf while Zionsville junior Adam Wood led wire-to-wire in winning the individual crown at The Legends Golf Club in Franklin.

The Shamrocks, who made the school's first appearance in the boys golf state finals just last year, shot a two-day 575 edging top-ranked Columbus North by two strokes. Floyd Central placed third at 580. All three teams actually bettered the previous 36-hole record of 587 set by Avon in the first round of 2009.

Westfield was comprised of sophomore Timmy Hildebrand who tied for third overall with a 138, senior Colton Smith was 18th at 145, freshman Thomas Lewis and senior David Hildebrand tied for 31st at 148 and sophomore Keith Ponsler was 36th at 149. It was the fifth IHSAA state championship for the Hamilton County school and the first in a boys sport. All four previous crowns were won by the girls cross country team.

Zionsville junior Adam Wood (136) led wire-to-wire and took the individual title edging Floyd Central senior Devin Jenkins (137) by a single stroke. Wood is the second Zionsville golfer to win the individual medal along with James Sacheck in 2004.

Jasper senior Will Seger started the day tied for 10th with a 71 but fired the tournament's best score on Wednesday with a 67 to finish tied for third at 138 with Timmy Hildebrand.

Noblesville also had a terrific second day tying the single round state finals record with a 283 equaling Columbus North's 2011 first round performance.

A new format was also in effect for this year’s state finals as all competitors - 15 teams and 100 players - played 36 holes over the two-day event with no cut after the first day as in previous years.

Brad Patz of Avon wins Fred A. Keesling Mental Attitude Award
At the conclusion of the state finals, Brad Patz of Avon High School was selected as the winner of the Fred A. Keesling Mental Attitude Award by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.

The 2013 Academic All-State and 2012 First Team All-Conference honoree is the President of Avon High School's Ambassadors Club, a member of the National Honor Society, as well as the Spanish National Honor Society. Within his community, Patz has served as a St. Susanna's Peer Ministry Retreat Leader as well as contributing to ambassador work in Avon.

Academically, Patz finished 7th out of 588 students in his graduating class. In addition to his Deans and Berat Scholarships, Brad has earned a scholarship to play golf at Maryville University this fall where he plans to study Actuarial Science.

He is the son of Dave and Kathy Patz and the brother of Breanna Patz who won the girls golf mental attitude award in 2008. He is also the second Avon boys golfer in three years to win the award following Patrick Rodgers in 2011.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Avon High School in the name of Patz.

The Committee presents the Fred A. Keesling Award to the outstanding senior participant during the state finals each year. The recipient of the award, nominated by his principal and coach, was determined to have best demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in boys golf. The award is named after the former long-time state tournament director.
