STATE-WIDE TELEVISION FOR VOLLEYBALL FINALS ON SATURDAY
Four top-ranked teams in their respective coaches poll, two of which are defending state champions, have advanced to the 39th Annual IHSAA Volleyball State Finals this Saturday (Nov. 6) at Ball State’s Worthen Arena in Muncie.
For the first time, all four state championship matches will be televised live to a state-wide audience on the IHSAA Champions Television Network which is made up of seven affiliates thoughout Indiana. Each match also may be seen via webstream at IHSAAtv.org. First serve of the Class A state championship match will be 2:37 pm ET, with the Class 2A match at 4 pm, 3A at 5:30 pm and 4A at 7 pm. Though any match could run long, no match will begin earlier than the time listed.
Penn (4A), Brebeuf Jesuit (3A), Muncie Burris (2A) and Lafayette Central Catholic (A) each sit atop their respective poll and hope to cap an outstanding season with a state championship on Saturday. Among those, Brebeuf Jesuit and Muncie Burris are defending state champions and are joined by another returning champion, Muncie Central, which won its sixth 4A tournament a year ago.
Lafayette Central Catholic (30-7) will make its third state finals appearance in four seasons and will be challenged by fifth-ranked Indianapolis Lutheran (27-11) making its third trip in a row. This will be the first time either school has played in the state championship match, however. To get here, Central Catholic beat No. 6 Wes-Del and No. 4 Pioneer in the semi-state while Lutheran beat No. 3 Barr-Reeve in five sets in the semi-state final. The Knights took a 2-1 decision in the regular season meeting between the two schools on Sept. 25.
The constant in Class 2A is Muncie Burris (38-0) which will play for its 14th consecutive state title and its 95th consecutive state tournament victory when it takes on fourth-ranked Fairfield (34-4). The Owls also have an 86-match win streak dating back to Oct. 13, 2008 when it lost to cross-town rival Muncie Central. Thanh Hornish is in her first season as Burris coach after taking over for legendary Steve Shondell who made the move to lead the Ball State women’s program in August after 34 years at Burris. Fairfield is no stranger to this level of the tourney nor to Burris as the Falcons have advanced to the finals for the fifth straight year. The two teams have met three times before with Burris winning in three sets in the 2006 championship match, in four sets in the 2007 state semifinals and in three sets in the 2008 semis. Fairfield turned away No. 6 Southwood in the semi-state, while Burris beat No. 3 Wapahani for the sectional championship and then swept No. 2 Brownstown Central last Saturday night.
Brebeuf Jesuit (31-2), winner of 25 straight, returns for the fourth consecutive year and will meet fourth-ranked Bellmont (33-4) in the 3A final match. Bellmont is making its fifth appearance in the state finals and first since its 2007 state championship season when it scored a four-set semifinal victory over Brebeuf. The Squaws enter this weekend with 18 straight wins, including a 3-1 victory over No. 3 Yorktown last Saturday night. During this year’s tourney trail, the Braves held on to win a five-setter over No. 2 Roncalli for the sectional title and swept No. 5 Batesville in the semi-state.
The 4A finale pits Penn (38-1) against third-ranked defending champion Muncie Central (34-4). The two squads met Sept. 11 with Penn taking a 3-1 decision. The Kingsmen will be playing in their second state title match and first since falling to Muncie Central in the last match of 2002. Penn held on for a 3-2 road win over No. 5 Elkhart Memorial in the regional and swept No. 4 LaPorte for the semi-state championship. Penn has won 32 straight since losing 2-1 to Muncie Burris on Aug. 28, its only setback this year. The Bearcats will play for the championship for the 11th time and are 6-4 in those matches. They’ve beaten three consecutive top 10 opponents in recent days. They turned away No. 10 Indianapolis Cathedral, 3-2, in a regional road meeting, its third over the Irish this season, then took 3-1 decisions from No. 8 Avon and No. 2 Columbus East in the semi-state matches.
Our Meet the Teamsfile contains rosters, statistics and season results for all eight state finalist teams.
