The Oregon-Davis Bobcats, a dominant team all season, benefited from a powerful start in the Class A state championship game and made it hold up for a 69-64 victory over the Vincennes Rivet Patriots.

Oregon-Davis jumped to a 9-0 lead, stretched it to 15-2 and then moved ahead by a 27-9 count at the end of the first quarter. The Bobcats' pressing, fast-breaking style paved the way – just like it did all year as the team ranked second in the state with a 75.96 scoring average and first with a  35.5 average winning margin.

Rivet fought back and sliced the Bobcats' edge to five points, 67-62, with 1:32 left in the game. However, Ashley Campbell's poise at the free throw line – with 8-of-9 in the final quarter – enabled Oregon-Davis to put the game away.

Campbell finished with 34 points, hitting 9-of-14 field goal attempts and 14-of-16 free throws. Her scoring total broke the Class A mark of 28 set by Brittany Schoen of South Central in 2006 and ranked as the most points scored in any state title game in class basketball. Jessica Avarone added 16 for the winners.

Coach Terry Minix's Bobcats, ranked No. 1 in the girls coaches' poll, finished 23-2. The championship was the second for Oregon-Davis' girls basketball team, which also won in 2007.

For Rivet, Kelsey Ivers led the way with 23 points and Lauren Herman scored 21.

Coach Tim Young's Patriots, ranked fourth in the coaches' poll, completed their season at 22-5. Rivet was playing in its fifth Class A title game in six years and was seeking its second state crown in four seasons.  

Lauren Herman wins Patricia L. Roy Mental Attitude Award
Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Lauren Herman of Vincennes Rivet High School as the winner of the Patricia L. Roy Mental Attitude Award in Class A Girls Basketball.

The award is presented annually to a senior participant in each classification who was nominated by her principal and coach and has demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability.

Herman ranks seventh in her senior class academically, is a member of the National Honor Society, the Student Council, the English Team, Prom Committee and the Youth Leadership of Knox County. She also participates in volleyball and track for the Patriots.

She is the daughter of Dan and Ann Herman of Vincennes and plans to study Nursing at Indiana State University next fall.

The Indiana Fever and Indiana Pacers, the presenting sponsor of the IHSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Rivet High School in the name of Lauren Herman. Since 1989, more than $800,000 in college scholarships have been presented to deserving high school athletes in Indiana.

The award is named in honor of the former IHSAA assistant commissioner Patricia L. Roy, who oversaw the girls basketball state tournament from its inception in 1976 until her retirement in 1999.
