North Miami took home the first state championship of the day, and its first in school history in the sport at the 30th Annual IHSAA Softball State Finals Saturday morning at Ben Davis High School.

It took extra innings to determine the Class 1A winner, as North Miami pushed across two runs in the top of the 10th inning and defeated North Daviess 3-1.

The Warriors jumped on opportunities early in the 10th. After being intentionally walked for the fourth time of the day, junior Josie Wood scored from first on a fielding error on a hard-hit ball from sophomore Josie Knauff.  Senior Savannah Davis then hit a single to right field, bringing in Knauff for the second run.

North Daviess was the first to score in the game, after loading the bases in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Kayla Knepp’s single to centerfield scored junior Jess Miller, giving the Cougars an early 1-0 lead.

North Miami evened the game in the top of the sixth, when Wood scored from second on a throwing error.

In addition to her two runs scored and reaching base on all five of her trips to the plate, Wood turned in a dominating performance on the mound with 17 strikeouts to finish the year 22-1.

Rob Cooley’s Warriors finished the season at 29-4. The football team won the Class A title in 1993 to account for the Miami County school's only other state championship.

Head coach Jodi Graber Berry led North Daviess to a record of 18-12. It was the school's second runner-up finish (2005).

Tailon Graber of North Daviess Wins Mental Attitude Award
Members of the IHSAA Executive Committee announced Tailon Graber of North Daviess High School as the winner of this year’s Mental Attitude Award in Class A Softball.

As the Cougars starting pitcher, Graber was named to the Southwest Indiana All-Conference team in 2012, 2013, and 2014.

Ranked 10th in her class, Graber is a member of the National BETA Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is an active youth leader in her church, and will travel to Costa Rica this summer to take part in a mission trip.

She is the daughter of Mark and Amy Graber of Montgomery.

The IHSAA Executive Committee presented a $1,000 scholarship to North Daviess High School in the name of Tailon Graber.
