Mishawaka Marian Captures First Girls Soccer State Title

Posted: October 27, 2012

In a rematch of last year’s Class A state championship, it was Mishawaka Marian turning the tables  on defending champion Providence with a 2-0 victory for its first girls soccer championship.

Offensively, both teams were evenly matched as Marian took 12 shots to Providence’s 11 but the Knights were able to capitalize on their chances. They opened the scoring in the 10th minute of play with a goal from sophomore DJ Veldman who buried a shot after an assist from sophomore Shannon Hendricks. Their second goal came in the 30th minute when a perfectly placed free kick from Hendricks found the back of the net.

Marian, under the direction of head coach Djamel Charmet, finishes its championship year with a record of 18-4-2. Providence, coached by Dave Smith, finished its season with a 14-5-3 record in the school’s second straight state finals appearance.
