Mishawaka Marian Captures Back-to-Back Title

Posted: October 29, 2016

Led by a stingy defense and an explosive offense, the Mishawaka Marian Knights pulled away from Providence to secure their second consecutive Class A Soccer Title.

It took most of the first half for either team to gain an advantage, but in the 33rd minute, junior defenseman Roberto Ontiveros found himself in position to head in his fourth goal of the season. But after a slow first half, the Marian offense kept momentum on their side in the second with Jordan Morris’ goal in the 42nd minute. The junior forward netted his second goal of the day, and 15th of the season, near the halfway point of the second half to give the knight’s a comfortable lead. Wanting in on the offensive action, junior midfielder Johnathan Tavarez lasered an unassisted goal to the back of the net from 25 yards out.

While the Mishawaka Marian offense kept the pressure on Providence, the Knight’s defense kept their lead safe by holding Providence to a total of eight shots for the entire game, only five of which were on goal. Freshman goalie Hunter Renner saved all five shots he faced before he turned keeper duties over to his senior counterpart, Michael Cataldo, to close out the match.

Mishawaka Marian, coached by Ben Householter, finished their championship season with a record of 18-5. The Pioneers and Head Coach Nathan Marshall wrapped up their season with a final record of 18-3-1.
