MAKSIMIK'S TWO GOALS LEAD LAKE CENTRAL TO FIRST BOYS SOCCER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Randy Maksimik scored his second goal of the state finals in the 15th minute to stake Lake Central to a lead it never gave up, and the Indians earned a hard-fought, 2-0 win over Indianapolis Cathedral Saturday night in Indianapolis in the boys soccer state championship match at Kuntz Stadium. The victory marks the first-ever state championship in boys soccer for Lake Central, its second in a boys sport and sixth overall.
Maksimik’s long-distance finish came after a short corner kick, and was followed just over a minute later by another Indians goal when junior forward Manny Rios stole an errant back pass by the Fighting Irish and slotted another home past Cathedral goalkeeper Alex Dickman. Both of Maksimik’s goals this season came at the state finals.
Dickman’s second-half heroics kept the Fighting Irish in the match, but Cathedral was unable to muster a goal against Indians goalkeeper Brandon Cloutier, who punched away shots and snagged errant crosses all over his penalty area. Dickman registered eight saves, while Cloutier snagged three shots in the match.
Indianapolis Cathedral defeated Warsaw, 2-0, in their afternoon semifinal match, behind goals from senior forwards Max Odgaard and Brooks Butler. Head coach Paul Schroeder’s Fighting Irish wrap up their season with a 20-4-1 record.
Lake Central marked its second consecutive appearance in the state finals by knocking off Evansville Memorial 3-1 in their semifinal match. Jereme Rainwater, the Lake Central head coach, has now led the Indians to three state finals appearances in the last six seasons. Rainwater’s team finished 21-3.
