Madison-Grant wins the school’s first ever state championship title in today’s 2A softball state finals tournament defeating Linton-Stockton, 1-0, who was also making their first appearance.

Linton-Stockton threatened in the 2nd when they advanced runners to second and third with one out.  But Madison-Grant’s senior pitcher Sara Webster was able to escape the inning by getting the next two batters to fly out.

In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore Kailey Leckron scored the only run for Madison-Grant when she entered the game as a pinch runner for senior catcher Bonnie Parker who drew a walk off of Linton-Stockton’s pitcher Stephanie Fougerousse.  Junior designated player Sydney Holland sacrificed with a bunt advancing Leckron to second.  An ensuing single to center field by junior Shelby Wells brought Leckron home.

The Miners again challenged Madison-Grant in the top of the 6th when senior first baseman Izzy Carpenter doubled to left center.  Junior Kylie Niebrugge replaced Carpenter as a pinch runner and advanced to third on a ground ball from junior third baseman Jenica Ringo.  Madison-Grant ended the Linton-Stockton threat when senior third baseman Sam Yeagy made a nice catch of a foul ball to end the inning.

Linton-Stockton kept the Argylls at bay, not allowing a hit in the bottom of the 6th, but the Miners were unable to capitalize in the top of the 7th as they were retired in order. Linton-Stockton finished the season with a record of 21-6.  The Miners were led by 6th year head coach Jill Flater.

The Argylls and 15-year head coach Jay Dunlap finished their season 23-6.

IZZY CARPENTER NAMED MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD WINNER
Izzy Carpenter of Linton-Stockton High School was recognized by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee as this year’s recipient of the Mental Attitude Award in Class 2A softball.

Ms. Carpenter finished 11th in her class of 81 while participating in the Academic Honors Diploma program.  She received numerous scholarship awards including Beta Sigma Phi, Kappa Kappa Kappa, Phil Harris and the James M. Brown.

While a four-year member of the softball team, Carpenter was named All-Conference three years and was a co-captain for two years.  Izzy was a two-year letter winner in basketball, a three-year letterwinner in volleyball and was named co-captain of the Miner’s basketball team.

Carpenter attends Switz City Baptist Church and an active member of 4-H while volunteering her time with children’s basketball and volleyball camps, the Glenburn/Linton Nursing Home and Head Start Preschool.

At Linton-Stockton she was class president all four years as well as being president of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club and S.A.D.D.

Izzy plans on studying Optometry at Indiana University in Bloomington.

She is the daughter of Mark and Sandy Carpenter of Linton.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Linton-Stockton High School in the name of Izzy Carpenter.
