Lapel Rolls to Second Boys Basketball Crown, First in Class 2A

Posted: March 26, 2016

Lapel had to gut out four wins of six points or less during the Class 2A boys basketball state tournament. But there was no such drama when the Bulldogs got to the final game.

The second-ranked Bulldogs scored the first six points of the game, led by 18 at halftime and rolled past No. 7 Indianapolis Howe 59-37. It was the second state title for Lapel – both coming under Coach Jimmie Howell, a 1972 Lapel graduate. The title was the 565th win of Howell’s coaching career.

Lapel (26-4) shot 45 percent from the floor, outrebounded the Hornets 38-34, outscored Howe 36-16 in the paint and had 14 assists on 22 baskets. The Bulldogs also limited Howe to 29-percent shooting.

Lapel led just 10-7 with two minutes left in the first quarter before going on a 14-0 run that pushed the margin to 24-7 with 5:25 left in the first half. The lead was 33-15 at halftime and quickly grew to 22 points a minute into the third quarter. The Bulldogs would lead by as many as 26 points and never let the margin get below 18 points the rest of the way.

Lapel got 21 points, 12 rebounds, four blocked shots and three assists from junior guard JonRoss Richardson, while senior forward Triston Carpenter added 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Senior guard Kamron Herrington added 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.

The Hornets, who were making their first state finals appearance, finished 23-8 under Coach Mosi Barnes. Senior guard Brian “Kipp’ Warren led Howe with 11 points, while junior forward Tyler Pannell pulled down 10 rebounds.

Brian (Kipp) Warren named Trester Mental Attitude Award Recipient
Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Brian (Kipp) Warren of Thomas Carr Howe Community High School as the winner of the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award in Class 2A Boys Basketball.

The award is annually presented to a senior participant in the state finals who best demonstrates mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability and is nominated by his principal and coach.

Warren has been an All-State selection the last two seasons and All-City the last three years. He also has competed in cross country for the Hornets all four years of high school. Kipp is the son of Brian Warren of Indianapolis and becomes the first student in his school's history to earn and IHSAA mental attitude award. He has not yet selected his college but plans to study Sports Medicine.

The 4A, 3A and 2A awards are named in honor of the late Arthur L. Trester who served as first commissioner of the Association from 1929 to 1944. Trester helped Indiana high school sports and the IHSAA emerge from the Great Depression in a position of preeminence unmatched by perhaps any other state in the nation.

The Indiana Pacers and Indiana Fever, the presenting sponsor of the IHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Thomas Carr Howe Community High School in the name of Brian (Kipp) Warren. Since 1989, more than $840,000 in college scholarships have been presented to deserving high school athletes in Indiana.
