IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (3/11/24)
"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"
Babe Ruth, the legendary home run hitter, once said that "Every strike brings me closer to a home run." In other words, he knew he was not going to hit a homer every time at bat, but he knew he would have another opportunity after that strike. In fact, the best hitters in the world are actually happy just to get a base hit one out of three times at bat.
The same thing applies to all student-athletes, regardless of the sport you play. In football, not every possession results in a touchdown, or a first down for that matter. In basketball, you would be considered a good shooter to consistently make one out of two field goal attempts. In tennis, you will likely not win every game in the sets you play.
No student-athlete will play a game or match of perfection. It is not a reasonable goal nor is it possible. So the next time you find yourself being critical of your play, give yourself a break. Remember that your goal is to give your best effort--and that could make the difference in the outcome of your game!
