IHSAA Baseball State Tournament Pairings Announced
A field of 383 teams and 7,197 student-athletes will begin play next week as the pairings for the 46th Annual IHSAA Baseball State Tournament Series were drawn today in Indianapolis.
Sectional competition begins Wednesday, May 23, and continues through Monday, May 28 (Memorial Day), with the 64 champions advancing to a four-team regional on Saturday, June 2. Two semifinal games will be played early that day at each site with the two winners returning for a championship game that evening. The 16 regional winners will be assigned to four semi-state sites and play a single game on Saturday, June 9, with the winners moving into their respective state championship games.
This year’s four state championship games, scheduled for Friday, June 15, and Saturday, June 16, will be played at Victory Field in Indianapolis.
Among the top-ranked teams in this week’s poll from the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association (IHSBCA), Lafayette Central Catholic sits atop Class A as the three-time defending state champions. The Knights, with 19 consecutive tourney wins over the last three years, will begin by hosting Tri-Central in the Sectional 54 opener. They’ll be attempting to become the first school to win four consecutive baseball state titles. Jasper is the only other school to have won three straight (1996, 1997, 1998 (3A)).
In Class 4A, No. 1 Lake Central will take on home-standing Munster in Sectional 1; Class 3A’s top-ranked Jasper will host Pike Central in the Sectional 31 bye game and; Class 2A No. 1 Wheeler will face Hammond Bishop Noll in the Sectional 33 bye game at Whiting.
Each of the other defending state champions drew a bye into the next round including two-time defending winner and unranked Carroll (Fort Wayne) (Class 4A) which will face the East Noble-Fort Wayne North Side winner in Sectional 5 at DeKalb. Unranked Crawfordsville (Class 3A) drew a bye into the Sectional 25 semifinals and will meet the North Putnam-North Montgomery winner and; unranked South Spencer also picked up a bye and will take on the winner between No. 8 Forest Park and Tell City in Sectional 48 at Southridge.

About the Draw
To conduct the random drawing for the baseball state tournament, the IHSAA places ping-pong balls representing each school in a given sectional into a lottery-style air mix machine. A motorized fan in the bottom of the machine blows the balls around the inside of the transparent container and air then forces each ball up through a tube in random order. For example, the first ball retrieved from the machine will be the visiting team in game one with the second ball representing the home team in game one. The third ball to come out is the visitor in game two and the fourth ball the home team in game two. That same method is followed through all 64 sectionals and 16 regionals.
No. of Schools Entered: 383 teams, 7,197 participants.
By Class: 101 schools in Class 4A, 100 in 3A, 96 in 2A and 86 in 1A.
