Guerin Catholic Scores First State Championship Title
Guerin Catholic's Zach Garvey's second half goal was all that was needed as the top-ranked Golden Eagles claimed a 1-0 victory over Providence for the Class A state championship at IUPUI's Carroll Stadium.
Guerin kept the pressure on Providence throughout the contest outshooting them 28-0 making it an active day for Providence goalkeeper Jeff Wiles. Wiles had 13 saves in the game and only allowed Garvey's goal in the 72nd minute.
John Cech coached Guerin Catholic to a 18-2-3 championship season while Providence ended 15-7-2 under coach Brandon Rogers.
Doug Kaskie of Guerin Catholic Named Mental Attitude Award Winner
Doug Kaskie of Guerin Catholic High School was named winner of the 2013 Mental Attitude Award for Boys Class A Soccer by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.
The Golden Eagles captain has led his team to three consecutive regional championships and the school’s first state finals appearance. Kaskie is a member of the National Honor Society, student council, engineering club, and is a vacation bible school instructor. The two-sport athlete also plays baseball for Guerin Catholic.
He is the son of John and Lori Kaskie of Carmel. Doug plans to attend Purdue University next year, to study engineering.
The IHSAA Executive Committee presented a scholarship check for $1,000 to Guerin Catholic High School in the name of Doug Kaskie. Since 1989, more than $800,000 in college scholarships has been presented to deserving high school students in Indiana.
