Guerin Catholic to be honored with Blue Horseshoe Award
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - On Sunday, December 30, the Indianapolis Colts and Indiana High School Athletic Association will honor Guerin Catholic High School as the recipient of the 2012 Blue Horseshoe Award. The Blue Horseshoe Award is presented annually in recognition of a high school football program whose acts of service better their community.
Twenty-five student-athletes from the Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles football team will take part in the pre-game National Anthem ceremonies and will be honored with the Blue Horseshoe Award at halftime of the Indianapolis Colts-Houston Texans game at Lucas Oil Stadium.
The Indianapolis Colts and IHSAA teamed to launch the statewide program in 2009. IHSAA member football teams are invited to complete community service projects in the off-season. The program offers opportunities for football players to develop as teammates, aid their community, and promote their school. It is the goal of the Blue Horseshoe Award for the sport of football to transcend the gridiron and assist in the development of Indiana’s communities.
Guerin Catholic raised over $2,000 to benefit the Special Olympics of Indiana by participating in the “Polar Plunge” at Butler University in Indianapolis. The Golden Eagles were honored as having the largest team at the event, and the group worked to dedicate over 200 hours of time in total to support the Special Olympics of Indiana during the 2011-12 offseason.
Head Coach Andy Kremer on what motivated his team to part in the Polar Plunge: “We believe strongly in the Special Olympics, and have seen firsthand the effect that Special Olympics has on its participants; which is why every year we are ‘Freezin’ for a Reason!’ Our service to the community is our way of living Guerin Catholic High School’s vision statement. We have a great community here, and it is our job as administrators, teachers, coaches, and parents to teach our young people how to be servant leaders.”
“Guerin Catholic is a Roman Catholic school, deep rooted in faith formation and service commitments in our community,” said Chris Buhler, Guerin Catholic athletic director. “Coach Kremer and his team live our vision statement: Lead with humility; serve with love; trust in providence. We are humbled to have been selected as winners of the 2012 Blue Horseshoe Award.”
The Indianapolis Colts and IHSAA commend the Guerin Catholic football program for their teamwork off the playing field that helped support and further the mission of the Special Olympics. These student-athletes have gained an understanding of the power of teamwork when the helmet is off and have witnessed firsthand their impact as leaders in their community.
